I took my buddy out to shoot my LMT MWS today while we were checking cameras on our hunting property. On round number 4 while he was shooting, I noticed a large fireball come from the chamber of the gun. I did not notice it on any of the other rounds he shot. I was just wondering if anyone else has any insight on what this might be or if I should be concerned? I checked the primers on that specific case and all the others and it appears normal. Any help would be appreciated. We fired two more rounds after the flash and the gun operated normally and the shots were on target.

Load Information:

168g SST
Winchester Brass
210M Primers
45.0 Varget

Sounds like a slamfire, with bolt still not locked, doesn't it?

A high primer?

Or, insufficient sizing of the cartridge case (die did not descend fully., possibly due to slip-up by operator OR, if a progressive press, because of a bullet seating, powder drop, or primer feed or seating hiccup?

And, 45g of Varget is pretty hot isn't it?

Chamber was definitely forward. 45.0 is on the higher end of the scale for what is suggested. I still need to break it down when I get home to be sure nothing is messed up. Out of the 130 rounds I have through it, this is the first time something like this has happened with similar loads.

When you say 'from the chamber', do you mean from the ejection port? Was the bolt carrier moving back when the flash happened, or still in battery?

Sorry, yes from the ejection port. It appeared right when he shot. I really wish I had video of it. The bolt was forward when I saw the flash. Really odd too. Shot was on target, no extra marks on the brass, no apparent damage to any of my components.

Jim, for these loads it was a single stage.

^^ this, thats the same thing I was thinking. Doesn't every Ar do this when the gas comes out the tube? sounds normal, just the first time you saw it maybe.

Well you make me feel better then if that is all it is. I feel dumb for asking now, but hey you never know. I asked a couple of guys at work about it and they all said they had no idea what it was. I'm taking that it doesn't happen on every round then?
