Well, I have an interesting one......
I have been reloading for at least 25 years, so I know my way around reloading pretty well. I recently purchased an additional XL 650 for loading 230 Grain RN .45 ACP. I also have a 650 that I've had for close to 20 years and it's set up for 9mm. No issues on the 9mm setup, everything works fine.
Years ago, I purchased a lot of reloading supplies, around the time of "the great primer scare". I have just started using the old (18, maybe 20 years old) Large Pistol primers and am having a hell of a time. Using both Federal 150 and CCI 300 LPPs. They seem to be "too large" in diameter (can't believe I'm even typing this......). Many of them won't pass through (Frankford or Dillon) primer pick up tubes, through the Vibraprime, or the expensive Italian version (the name escapes me now). The pickup tubes were either new, or lightly used, not damaged in any way. Of the primers that do pass, I put them into the XL650 Priming tube/mechanism. I get a very high percentage (15 to 20%) of primers that go into primer pocket sideways or are crushed in some manner, because they don't enter the primer pocket straight. I buy once fired brass, mixed headstamp (cull the SPP's) and clean/process it myself.
So, I picked up a 1,000 new CCI 300 LPP's last night and gave it a try on 100 rounds. No jams in the pickup tubes and they went through the Vibraprime just fine. I did have some sideways primer failures, but they were all with "nny" headstamp (Privi Partisan brass if I understand correctly). I can cull the "nny" stuff, that's not a big deal. Interestingly, I had run every piece of brass through the XL 650 to swage the primer pockets previously, using a Swageit tool. So, all brass pockets were swaged prior to attempting to reload them (including the "nny"). All brass was/is Large Primer and if a SPP piece of brass snuck in, it was discarded and not included in the conversation. Didn't have any SPP brass in this round anyway.
Are any of you aware of any dimensional changes, particularly the diameter of Large Pistol Primers, over the years ? I can't imagine that there would have been.
I'll continue to work this with the old primers, but I'm not going to spend a huge amount of time on it. I've got some money tied up in the old stock, but my time is worth something too.
