You can use any small rifle or small rifle magnum primer. But you will have to swage or remove the crimp first, of course.

Well thats why I asked.. I primed a few pieces of brass with #400 primers and some of them went in pretty loosely, without swaging the pockets..

Well thats why I asked.. I primed a few pieces of brass with #400 primers and some of them went in pretty loosely, without swaging the pockets..

Bump'n this back up. Still not sure how I was able to prime a bunch of LC brass without swaging them. They were once fired. Hell, I even had one where the primer wouldnt stay in..

Not sure how you got the primers in the pocket without swageing them. You HAVE to take the crimp out to properly seat the primers.
For low volume, the RCBS primer pocket swager works fine, The Dillon is highly praised for higher volume if you are going to be doing 1k + I would look into it.
If you only need to do a few, people also remove the crimp with a chamfer tool.

I have primed a lot of LC brass without swagging, but it makes them harder to go in, and occasionally you will have one that won't go in. I have found it depends on the batch of LC as to whether I have to swag them or not. When I do, I just take a cheap pairing knife and swivel it around the edge. It is faster, and cheaper then the other methods.

Easily cut out with an exacto knife.

I thought you only had to swag them if they were once fired military rounds. I bought 1000 new from scharch brass and had no problem priming them. I also got some once fired, and you could see the crimp. Bought the dillon swager and worked them over.
But new, I am pretty sure they dont need swagged. Need uniforming though.

If they're new they haven't been primed, so they haven't been crimped, so they don't need to be swaged.

There are several places on the internet that sell 1X fired, processed RTG 223 brass. Scharch and Hi-techammo to name a couple.
A friend sold me a bag of roughly 1k 1x fired unprocessed 223 mil brass for 20$, I have been going through it the past few days. Most are crimped but not all, and some the crimp is so light that it can be primed without swaging it.
As far as primers go whatever small rifle primer you can get your hands on will work fine.

I just did a batch of 250 LC cases (LC01). I set my Dillon up for it. I sort by headstamp and set my deswager for each batch. With in that batch I had some that were hard enough to seat that I put them in the Dillon again and some that were loose enough they slipped right in with out feeling resistance. I've noticed the same thing on other batches with WCC also.

The batch I have are mostly LC 08 to LC 10 head stamps. Ever so often I find an LC 94 or really old head stamp. NOt sure where they come from, but I got it from a guy off GB out of Florida..

I use LC brass exclusively and have loaded them with all sorts of primers. Most work just fine. If the brass is brand new then it will not have been crimped since it has never been primed. If you are going to use the once fired brass and deal in high volume then the Dillon tool will be very helpful. Good luck.
