is there a way for me to legally put a sub 16" barrel on my ai at? From what I understand, the sbr process needs to start with a stripped lower receiver, so I'm guessing my ai is doomed to be long. thanks and looking forward to insight

Nope, all you need to do is fill out the paperwork for a form 1 SBR. Send it in and wait. When it comes back you can put your short barrel into the reciever and you're good to go. Just be aware that from that point forward, no matter what barrel is in the rifle, it's a registered short barrel rifle.
File a Form 1. Engrave the receiver with the your name, city, and state according to NFA guidelines.

The Form 1 includes passport photos, FBI fingerprint cards, and a certification that you have notified your local chief law enforcement officer. If you file now you will probably have to wait 6 months to get the stamped Form 1 approval back.
