I have been trying to call local LEO Agencies for information about the Ranges they use and how they are set up and how to do it best if YOU are building a new Range. I want to know about funding and Grants and where to apply for them.
Any of you LEOs on here, I need some help.
I DAMN sure am tired of talking to recordings with NO input back.
Would you not like a Range being built and you could input into it to be something nice ? Maybe come out and work on it?
I am trying, but I get the thing that NO ONE gives a FUCK, they are all properly trained and need no practice. And please stay on hold while I route you through to someone who gives a FUCK.
What happened to the time you could call the Police Department and get some help, no matter what?
"Please stay on hold or call 911??" Don't call the Police Department, WE are too busy assisting other callers and I am a dispatch woman who knows so much that I can answer any question. Enough said, and she didn't know how to route the call nor answer the question.

Why would you be calling the local LEO agencies about setting up ranges?
Most likely almost the entire department would not have a clue and you'd never get routed to the actual person responsible for ranges / training.

I doubt there is a LE range been set up by LE themselves in the past 50 years. Every LE range I know about built in the 40ish I spent in their hoods were all .Gov funded and built on NRA plans.
International Chiefs Assn lists the NRA for range building info.
Every existing older range I shot on was built to NRA specs and several were really old. Like 80-100 years old.
The nose in the tent today is the EPA on lead clean-up and again, the premiere range info people are the NRA.

And most LE grudgingly qual, with very few gun people in their 900k ranks, compared to the childhood years of Grandpa FM....??

NRA? Hmm never thought of that.
We are going down that road and have for some time.
I am wondering if there are any other grants, sources of funds I haven't thought of.
Some other alphabet thing that funds LEO training. FM

NRA provides funds for non LE ranges. I am not aware of any other funds available for non LE.
NRA range service people could tell you though.

LE range funds can come from several grant areas depending on available funding and how good your grant writer is, but again, the go to people are NRA.

There are only two nationally recognized organizations that certify LE firearm instructors that I am aware of, NRA and FB1.
I am open to be educated more though.

What the fuck? The best person in the LEO chain to talk to about range construction is going to be the CLEO. Why are you talking to dispatchers when all you need to do is talk to the CLEO?

That being said, CLEO doesn't have too much control over who builds the range or how it's built. That shit tends to be buddy buddy with the mayor and city manager, who often fuck it all up.

There's a little town in TX that has a range being constructed by a many times over convicted felon as we speak, who is doing a shit job to boot. CLEO ain't happy about that.

QuicknDirty, I have called several agencies looking for tips and sources of funding. We are going down the road of NRA and State Parks and get funding from both.
I am looking for other sources if they are out there, specific to LE.
I go through standard procedures of calling the business office and get the standard run around, leave a message and hear nothing back.
Damn, I hate those electronic telephone machines. Frustrating contraptions that make you feel like you should just talk to the tree in the back yard.
The range is County owned, just putting the feelers out for Grants etc. other than NRA. We need help and want to build this thing right the first time.
We have the NRA plans but wonder if there are not some features we could add to make it a neat useful fun to shoot range. FM
Thank you all for your suggestions and I quite agree that few Cops are gun people. Seems to be little to no interest from them other than 1 or 2.

QuicknDirty, What is this CLEO you mention?
If it is the Chief Law Enforcement Officer, "They ain't got time fo that shit." is what I come up with. They hand it down to the secretary and tell her to take care of this asshole. She then routes your call to someone, who is never there, and you feel he is there but boffing you off, you leave your message and that is the end of that.
Don't do it one or twice, call multiple time and wish for the best, wish in one hand and spit in the other and see what fills up first.
I would think that when a Govt. public range was being built and an area was dedicated to LE, were it me I would at the least want to input on how it is going, what is being set up etc. That is not happening, yet if they do come shoot [rare occasion] they are the first to bitch about things. "You should have done this, etc"
We do have ONE Outstanding LEO that goes out there and gets on the tractor and builds things, but he is alone, none of his fellow officers help and I know damn good and well that they know of it. It is a County range, open to the public yet we have an area dedicated to them.
I am of the opinion that these electronic telephone systems create nothing but apathy and in turn sloth with these guys and they need to hook up and return calls even if it is,"I don't know and I can't help you." "OK, thank you, do you have any ideas for me?" Nothing, zip, nada.
If someone was trying to build you a nice range, would you not get involved and tell us what you want and maybe suggest a source for funding, like your training budget? or whatever? FM

Most departments where I worked used either military ranges, or private gun club ranges for training. The military has their own requirements for range development and use, most private gun clubs use the NRA resources to set up the range. Few departments have the money to build and maintain their own ranges.

Most likely almost the entire department would not have a clue and you'd never get routed to the actual person responsible for ranges / training.

Don't call the army either, 200 years and they still haven't figured out how to work with range control.

Why not call a functioning range and see what they say? The range I go to was setup and sponsored by the NRA in the 40's (and still has this stupid 8 round max "because that's what Garands maxed out at" --who gives a fuck, haven't seen a Garand EVER at that range!).

Anti's are always trying to get it shut down. I suppose they'd rather I fire 7.62 in their subdivisions? So whatever you do, I can tell you no amount of berms, baffles or rules will ever be enough. But so far they've been told to fuck off, nobody told 'em to build their house the minimum distance possible from the impact area.

Whatever you do, setup a damn spot where .50's can be tested, zero'd whatever, even if it's only a 100m lane.
