15 years ago I bought a Leupold 12 -40 60 mm spotting scope for $450. (a big discount) from a friendly gun shop owner and now they sell for almost $1,000. for my non-HD model!
I got it for hunting because all the other good spotting scopes had removable (read fogging) eyepieces.
My Leupold scope has been very reliable and seen it's share of rain and snow yet it always delivered a great view. I've used Rain-X on the exterior lens surfaces with no degredation of their coatings. Gotta say that spotting scope was a good purchase for an excellent optic.
About 5 years ago I bought Pentax DCF 8 X, 42 mm binoculars for just over $400. and they are still great binos.
Neither of these optics had ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lenses but the lenses are so good I really can't tell when comparing to ED optics.
