Leupold Mark 4HD vs 5HD

I want to get into "longish range shooting" and maybe a few PRS matches or NRL hunter type matches. Should I save my money and get a Mark 5? Is the glass any different 4 vs. 5? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Give me a call at 916-628-3490 and I can go over the differences and guide you to the correct choice :) - Richard

I compete in PRS and F class with a Mk4 and it works great. I’ve got the 6-24 (prs2 reticle) and it runs like a scalded dog. The glass is clear and I’ve had no problems with parallax or focus at distance. BUT, if I had it to do over again, I’d get the 8-32 power (have and not need, but needing and not having).

I'd take the 36 mils of elevation with the 6-24 vs the 20 mils of the 8-32 though.

Since my experience with the MK4 2.5-10, it kind of catches my attention when I see someone running a Mk4 or Mk5 and I just have to check it out and, if allowed, try it out.

From what I've seen, in terms of glass quality and overall performance, the analogy that comes to mind is the Vortex PST 1-6 vs The Razor 1-6. The PST is a good bit less expensive and gets you 95-99% of the way there, but you've gotta pay a lot for that last little bit. Whether its worth it is up to you.

The Mk4s are a good bang for the buck.

Leupold's website says 30 mils, or did I read it wrong?

I live in the southeast, so there aren't too many places to shoot past 1100 where I would need that much adjustment.

Elevation Adjustment Range (MIL) 20

I just read back on what you wrote and misunderstood. My bad. Yes, the mk4 only has 20mil adjustment. I thought you were talking about the Mk5.

The 8-32 MK4HD has 20 mils but the 6-24 MK4HD has 36 mils just so there's no confusion that all MK4HD's are the same :)

I have both, no issues with either and they get the job done. I haven't said when shooting "wish I had the MK5 on this rig" It was more of "do I need to spend the extra on this for my needs?" I would say, get what you want, even if you have to postpone the purchase a month or so.
