I think it's been well established here the popular opinion is the mk8 is priced too high, but if it were priced in the same ballpark as a Razor II, AMG, K624, etc. how would it stack up?

With Leupold manufacturing being right up the road from me here in Oregon I have to represent and say I'd take the mk8 over the others in a heartbeat. Why? Cuz I think they are a top notch scope manufacturer and I think it's a better optic than the others listed. Do I have any proof of this other than a fanboy opinion? I don't.

But I can tell you they make a fine product and stand behind it 100%

That being said. The mk8 is grossly overpriced lol:poop:

Leupold is like that one ugly chick who’s got the attitude of a really hot chick.

Customer service sucks, their features are lacking compared to other scopes, and their QC is atrocious. I would give examples of each but that’s it’s own thread.

They rested on their laurels a little too long and in my opinion are getting left in the dust to the other scopes.

With Leupold right DOWN the road from me, I would say get something else.

Are you speaking directly about the mk8 or leupold as a whole? I can't find many complaints about the mk8 aside from price, and I'm a big fan of the CCH reticle.

Leupold as a whole. I can’t say anything about the mk8 as I haven’t handled one. But I’ve had more leupold scopes than any other combined so it’s coming from what I’ve experienced.

For example, we had bought a bunch of mk6’s 1-6x20. We couldn’t zero about 6 of them. After popping the turret caps off of the working units and comparing them to the ones that didn’t work, we found the actually turrets, the mechanical portion, was actually flip flopped. So the zero stop for the elevation was on the windage and you couldn’t adjust your poi left. I had never seen that ever. And it was on 6 other scopes! This wasn’t a single fuck up.

I then went to a test shoot a few months later where a leupold rep showed up and I asked him what’s up with these scope. He then went on to say how leupold was the largest manufacturer of scopes in the world, etc. not even addressing the problem.

I don’t know, to me, that’s a pretty big screw up and just to play it off like it’s not a big deal kind of turned me off to how they address their problems. Plus, now I had 6 guns that had to use other optics.

That’s just one of the headaches I’ve had dealing with them. Now compare that to a company like vortex who have great optics and the customer service is beyond accommodating, it’s a no brainer.

A friend has a couple of the Mk 8s, I've looked through both of them. The optical quality is no doubt among the best I've ever seen, but what's up with the really thick black ring surrounding the view through the scope? No matter where I held my head while trying different eye relief distances, that thick ring remained. Never seen that on any other scope I've used, and it's a poor comparison to the great eyebox of my Kahles K624i scopes. I didn't care for the Mk 8's 'pinch to unlock' turrets either. While I'm sure you'd get used to them with regular use, I much prefer the turrets on the Kahles - stiff enough detents to prevent accidental turning, yet easy enough to turn so that it's really easy to get one click when that's all you want. They are, hands down, my favorite turrets out of all the scopes I've handled or shot with.

Are you referring to tunneling? What power were you at?

After several months of waiting I finally got my new MK8 in a 3.5x25 with the 35mm tube and 56mm objective. I can't say enough about this scope other than its a bit heavy but not as heavy as some NF scopes I have played with . Clarity is great and I love the front focal system on this unit. Its going on my custom AR10 with a 24" Lilja SS barrel, my gunsmith says it should be a tack driver! I had to wait 5 months for them to finish the military contract on these scopes. I didn't realize how hard they were to get directly from Leupold.

I’ve owned multiple of each of them and of the choices listed, I would go AMG.

Fantastic glass quality and turrets, forgiving eye box, and the EBR-7B is one of the best reticles you can get in any scope at this point, much less Vortex. Factor in that it’s the lightest/most compact of the bunch, and it really is the best all around optic of the group in my opinion.

I know a lot of people like the Kahles and I’ve tried super hard to like them, but they’re by far the worst of the bunch at controlling CA (touchy subject for some), and to be frank I expect more from optics in the $2500 range. Reticle, turrets, etc. are excellent, but the glass quality is a let down for me.

The MK8s are great optics, glass quality especially is second to none. But they’re 35mm tubes, have limited reticle selections, and both the M5B2 and M5C2 turrets leave a little to be desired for me. The latter is definitely the better iteration of the two, but neither are outstanding for me. If you can deal with a Horus or CCH reticle then rest assured, you will like the glass.

So for me, I would go AMG > MK8 > Kahles = Gen 2, but again, it really comes down to personal preference. In that range, it’s tough to go wrong.

If you get time, read the Precision Rifle Blog. You can read up on what most brands are used and feedback. I will say Vortex has taken the top spot.
I love a vortex, and will probably end up with another at some point, but Vortex gives out so many for free to sponsored shooters which is a big reason why it look disproportionate to others.
