I'm pretty close to picking one of these up for my lightweight Remington 700 in .30-06. I love the light weight and low profile of the scope, 4x is enough for 500m (the rifle is mostly a hunting gun so I doubt I'll want to shoot it too far past that) and 1.25x would be great for those close up snap shots. It has a mil-dot reticle, FFP, illumination... What's not to like?

Glass seems great and it only runs $550. Anything I should know that would steer me away from this scope before I buy?

Are you sure about it being FFP?

I have one that is perhaps only a year old, and it is definitely SFP. I think it is a very nice scope on an AR, but not sure I'd try anything close to 500 yards on game with it. I tend to like more magnification than that.

my favorite feature is the dot turns itself off when not in use, or if the scope is still for a few minutes. It then turns itself on when its moved. The dot in non-obtrusive and great for quick acquisition in the dark timber.

Weird, you guys seem to be right about it being SFP... I could have sworn the reticle magnifies upon zoom in the samples I've looked through. I'll have to take another look.

Knowing that and wanting to get a bit more range out of it (4x is a hair short for 500m+) I may go with an SWFA 3-9X42

I do think that it would still be perfect for hunting elk in the forest though.... Plus super light weight. The 3-9x42 isn't too heavy though.

I have a 3-9x40 VX-R Patrol.

Pros: lightweight, very good glass, how the illumination works

Cons: mushy indistinct clicks on the knobs, reticle too thick and too hard to tell between full and half mil markings, center is so thick that it obscures a 1" target dot at 100yds.

I like mine. Glass is clear and super light. Shot it out to 450 yards a few weeks ago hitting steel gongs. Like others have said the clicks are somewhat indistinct but it's not the kindof glass you're going to be turning up and down alot. Dot is great and the turn-off feature is nice. i wouldn't hesitate using for the reasons you stated.
