I am thinking about sending one of my older vx-III back to Leupold for the varmint hunters reticle. I havent ever looked at one in person but it looks pretty decent from what i see on the site. Does anyone have any dealings with this reticle? Whats your thoughts? My scope is a 6.5-20x40 target dot and it is a nice clear scope, but just not quite enough power for a bench rifle, so the target dot doesnt do me a lot of good. I figured the varmint reticle would give me some hold over positions. The scope will go on my 6x47L Tactical/hunting rifle. Thanks Lee

Re: Leupold's varmint reticle

Lee, I have several leupold 6.5-20 and one 8.5-25 with VH reticle. I like them on my hunting guns for the windage hash marks on the scopes. I buy the LR scopes and send them to leupold to put the M1 knobs on. I turn clicks so i don't use the verticle hash marks but know some guys that use them. Just remember that they are power sensitive in that the 1st verticle hash will be dead on at a longer distance and the 20X will be dead on at a shorter distance.

I have 6.5-20x with that reticle. I don't use the hash marks because of the second focal plane and I often change power out in the feild, etc. I do like the thinness of the reticle. The hashes are fine as long as your ballistics are similar to what they figured on, and you adjust to the proper power. I bought the scope used for a good price. Personally, I wouldn't pay extra for it though. And, shame on Leupold for charging what they do for reticle options...
