Looking to build a ultralight chassis rifle with a folding stock that can fit in a backpack . Using a Tikka t3x action, trigger, and 16” barrel that I already have

I like to keep the chassis and stock under $1,000 if possible, but would consider others. This is more of a recreational and travel gun rather then a competition rifle.

I live in a blue state, so ”pistol” type guns like the pork sword are not an option

What State
no, but there are laws against shorter barrels, even if it’s considered a “pistol” or other type of firearms
What state are you in?

For example: A folder + a short barrel that come in <26" would then be an issue in CA, but not because of the pistol grip. A 16"+ barrel on a bolt with a pistol gip, over 26" is fine, not an SBR or otherwise restricted. Obviously, I can't speak for every state of course, but it is one of those things that get messed up around this issue.

Here an example in stock in CA https://www.sportsmans.com/shooting...fles/barrett-mrad-bolt-action-rifle/p/1500948

Just so you know the XLR folders do not lock while open and will flop like a fish. The MDT and MPA folders lock while open. I would look at the MDT options, folder with an AR extension with CTR stock and riser if required. The MDT has an option for locking folders or non, depends on what you want. Do remember, the folders add weight.

Barrels less that 26 inches aren't an issue in California, maybe you meant 16 inches.
