I am looking to get an assembled lightweight AR-15 upper and was wondering if anybody has recommendations on a good quality piece to buy without breaking the bank.
Not interested in SBR's and such.

Was looking at Midway but couldn't see where they list weights.

Re: Lightweight Upper ???

Build!! But if you really don't want to..

Look at Bravo Company,Daniel Defense and Palmetto State Armory (more budget minded).

Think 14.5" LW Barrel with a Troy Alpha Rail.. that's a pretty light setup. Aimpoint H1/T1 to top or just flip-ups.

Re: Lightweight Upper ???

Knowing how light you want to go, what you want/need to do with the upper, and your total budget (incl. the upper itself and any sights/optics) might help in getting you pointed in the right direction.

If you want REALLY light, then building is the best option as you'll be able to hand select components with maximum weight savings in mind from barrel contour/length to handguards, etc. Aside from building, then go minimalist in terms of a 14.5" lightweight carbine upper with a permanently attached FH of your choosing to make it to the 16" length required to keep it out of NFA territory. Most of those regardless of the addt'l options included from the factory are pretty light in comparison.

Building is good advice from the previous posters to really save weight . . . BCM or DD for a 14.5 lightweight barrel.

Noveske NSR or Midwest Industries free float rails will be about the lightest rails without going for a carbon fiber rail. Really light would be a 10" MI or 11" NSR rail with lopro gasblock over a midlength or 9" over a carbine gas system. Could also use a barrel with FSB with the appropriate length rails.

The above are tube style rails. If you want a quad rail, a centurion will be strong and about as light as quad rails come.

One other thought - Rainier and Les Baer also have uppers without forward assist, which will save a few ounces. http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=2940

Re: Lightweight Upper ???

Thanks for the input.
I don't want to spend more than $500.

What I was initially hoping for was to buy an assembled upper rather than buy pieces and assemble it myself.
Perhaps something from CMMG or DPMS that is known to be their lightweight configuration.
The problem I am running into is finding out what stuff weighs.

Might just wait for the big gun show in Tulsa next month so I can handle items and compare them side by side.
