Hey guys, I'm curious what order do you do seating depth testing and primer testing? I've been doing load dev for mostly magnum and big bore rifles for the last 8 years or so and never really played around with different primers (just stuck with GM215M). Normally I find a decent load and then do seating depth variation to tighten up the groups and finalize the load. But working with short action cartridges lately, I find there are quite a few primer choices to play with. Case in point, I've been working up a 6.5x47L load using N550 and GM205M primers. I've found a good charge weight and am now starting to play with seating depth, but before I get too far in that process I get the sneaking suspicion I should test the base load with some of the other primers I have available (CCI 400, 450 magnum, etc).

Is that worth doing before seating depth tweaks or is it not that important?

I do my load work up with different primers as I do with different bullets, a completely new work up with each primer. Sometimes I'll cheat and take a load I worked up and sub a different primer. Sometimes it's better, sometimes it's not, sometimes it's the same. I believe primers do have an effect as does seating depth. I like Erik Cortina's approach though I don't and won't jam bullets as my shooting is more tactical/hunting in nature and won't risk pulling a bullet. Long range load development at 100 yards.
