Re: Load for AR-10 using IMR 4895 and 168MKs

I use IMR 4895 in both my TRG 22 and my DPMS SASS, Armalite AR 10 A4 and my LMT MWS. I use 168 grain SMK's with 38 grains of IMR 4895. My brother uses 39 grains of IMR 4895. With the TRG groups run constantly less than 0.5" 5 shot groups @ 100 yards. With the DPMS SASS between 0.5" & 0.7". Slightly larger with the other 2. I haven't tried to tailor the loads for the 3 semi's as I am primarily concerned with the TRG 22 groups so I consider that 38 grains of IMR 4895 a starting point for them.

Re: Load for AR-10 using IMR 4895 and 168MKs

I have been led to believe that the old M118 load was 44.0 grains of WC 846 or IMR 4895 behind a 173 gr. open-base boat-tail bullet. I have used 41.5 grains of IMR 4895 with both the 168s and the 165 Sierra hunting bullets in my MWS. The load and the rifle are both more accurate than I am...

Re: Load for AR-10 using IMR 4895 and 168MKs

This is a thread I was reluctant to post because I was sure it had been talked about before. Searched but never found much of what I was looking for.
I'm in the same boat you were in raptor99, Varget never shot well out of my AR10 with 20" 1:11.25 Lothar Barrel. I dig Varget and use it all day long in my Bolt gun with great success just not in the gas gun. I was told Varget was too slow burning for a 20" Barrel and it was recommended I step up to IMR4895. Got a lb but still have not rolled any. I also ordered a Krieger M110 Service Barrel the other day and just sent my break and bolt for final machine work. Some was out of desperation and for troubleshooting but mostly because they had them in stock and was in fear that when I needed one in the future it would not be, so I have a spare one way or another.
I appreciate those who shared their notes, those are cocktails I've not tried and will attempt when my parts come back. I'll try it before I doom the Lothar Barrel to make sure it just wasn't a powder thing. If anyone has any other load data they would not mind sharing I know I'll appreciate it. Thanks for posting raptor99.

Re: Load for AR-10 using IMR 4895 and 168MKs

Thanks guys for the info!!I actually tired some loads tonight. I started with 39.5grs then 40grs and then 40.5grs. 39.5 shot like crap then 40 put 5 into a .5 and 40.5 was right at 1.1"s.

I will reshoot the 40gr load and then try 41,41.5 and 42grs. to see what they do. Do any of you guys have any "Actual" velocity from a cronograph on your loads out of the ARs?? Thanks again!!!

Re: Load for AR-10 using IMR 4895 and 168MKs

I have some chrono figures for my loads, which consist of:168gr hornady BTHP's,Lake City 91 cases,39.0 grs IMR-4895, c.o.l. 2.800".I'm getting 2590 fps avg for this load.I have some heavier loads to try ,but haven't had a chance. The above load will shoot under an inch at 100 yds out of a 24"1-10 twist barrel, and will knock down steel pop-ups all day at 500 yds.(By the way,I also use CCI 34 primers with this load).

Well not IMR but H4895 I have some loaded under 168 Amax for OCW test.
Yeah I know they are different, just sayin'. Probably get a chance Monday to shoot out of the 16" LR .308 & chrono. I was advised, in this forum, to try the H4895 because of the faster burn rate over the Varget's of the world, because i have 16" barrel.

Starting
42.4 H4895, ending 43.7. I have a hunch about 43.0, don't know why.
Winchester twice fired
CCI BR-2
