Looking to get some ideas on where to start with my reloads for my .300rum

want to try out the 225gr hornady match bullets

anyone have experience with these in this cartridge?

i have some RL25 laying around, will play with that to start and work up a load, don't expect to the the velocity out of the RL25 that i could get out of some of the slower burning powders but, looking more for accuracy so the RL25 might not be a bad place to start.

what other powders do you guys have success with?

P.S. i already scanned RLnest

thanks in advance,
joe

does anyone reload for the .300 rum

Re: loads, .300rum 225gr hornady bthp match anyone?

I'M in your position right now and would like to see some input here. I'm going with H1000, Works wonders on my 300WM.

Re: loads, .300rum 225gr hornady bthp match anyone?

I started out with RL25 but had temp sensitivity issues, switched to Retumbo and all that went away. I load the 200 NAB and the 208 AMAX both in the ballpark of 90gr. Retumbo with CCI mags or Fed. mags lighting them up. I haven't tried too much else but it's a 1/2MOA gun with these so I don't see much sense in screwing with it. I've heard good things about H1000 but my last discussion with Bobby Hart was simple enough. "set the AMAX right at the lands with 90 gr. of Retumbo behind it and you'll win matches".

Re: loads, .300rum 225gr hornady bthp match anyone?

I just bought a box of the 225s to try in my 300 wm, so I will be on the look out for load data. I have rl22 and h1000.

RL-25 may be alright. I would seriously look at H1000 and Retumbo. Also wideners has the 50bmg milsurp powder, 39 bucks per 8 lbs that is supposed to work in the RUM very well.

Re: loads, .300rum 225gr hornady bthp match anyone?

just reloaded some of these up for my buddies .308

should be interesting

will find out Saturday

Re: loads, .300rum 225gr hornady bthp match anyone?

I've been loading my 300 Rum with the 208 AMAX. when I started I tried H-1000, Retumbo, RL-25, RL-22 and H4831SC.

The H-1000 gave me good velocity, but I couldn't get consistent sub moa groups with it.

Retumbo gave me the best velocity by far, but again didn't work really well for groups.

Rl-25 was good for accuracy, but the velocity was all over the place going across a chrony.

RL-22 gave me the best groups .5 MOA or less. but not real consistent on the velocity.

H4831SC. was what I found to work for me. I can get consistent .5 moa groups with it will maintaining a consistent velocity regardless of temp.

My go to load is

Nosler brass
81.0 G 4831SC
CCI 250
208 A-Max
loaded to 3.85" oal

I bump that load up to 83 gr when I go shoot at sea-level.

Rifle
Rem 700
Kreiger 1x10 twist barrel at 27"
Mcm A-5 stock
Premier 5-25

Shooting area.

So Cal High desert
elev: 3000' plus or minus 300'
humidity between 25-45 %
Temp between 45-110, depending on the time of year.

Again I'm shooting the 208 A-Max not the 225, but this my help give you some more info on where to start.

Re: loads, .300rum 225gr hornady bthp match anyone?

My 300wm 78grains of H1000 with the new 225.COAL 3.6 2890fps..G7 im using .351...its spot on..Its the best .30 cal bullet I used to date. I dont know about the 300RUM but this bullet seems to like being pushed hard and fast.

^^ This. I've played with Retumbo in the RUM and Win Mag cases, and it shot the best and gave the best results. Stand on the throtle and get to max pressure, and you'll find a sweet spot. And a drop tube is your friend cause you will need it!

Also, at the speeds a RUM pushes the 225, the G7 we use to get on target is a .357 G7 BC pushed at 3050 or 3150 fps (I can't remember the exact fps off the top of my head, but it's one of those). Last time out with the TRG, I ran a .352 G7 bc running at 2702 fps, which was good to 1780 yards. I just got a new barrel screwed on the TRG and am running them now at 2810 fps, so hopefully soon I'll get to play with them at ultra long range. BC might have increased slightly with the increase in speed.

I'll tease you with a few videos out of a 300RUM with the 225 BTHP at 1780 yards on a 36"x36" plate! You can see more if you go to youtube and type in my handle "chadtrg42" in the search bar.

Re: loads, .300rum 225gr hornady bthp match anyone?

Like others have said Retumbo, H1000 and RL25.

Running Retumbo currently in my RUM.

I wonder who decided that RL 25 was faster than 7828, H1000 etc...these powders are in a "range" much like the 4350 range ie RL15, 414 etc etc maybe 10 powders. Many things affect burning rate, ie temp, pressure, case fill, primer etc...so the chart is not always correct....I find that the powder that fills the case, ie max load, with max speed with a particular bullet weight may just do the best. If I can't overload the case the powder is too slow, if I can't fill it its too fast...now that's only when looking for max velocity...I shoot my 300 WM mostly as a 30-06 a 175 at 2783 with 61 grains of 4064. and with a shitton of 25 to push a 208 to more than 3100,,but load very long and use heavy cases
