Just bringin back the load data
My 2 best loads so far.

190 SMK, 59.5 RL22
178 AMAX, 58.5 RL22

Cant remember the COAL, got that written down. No chrony. 190's gimme an inch at 100 and the 178s around 3/4 with my stock 24" sporter barrel and untouched action.

Re: Loads for 30-06

k98 accurized action
custom cut chamber
1:10 twist on 26" Adams and Benett barrel
No comment on COL, distance from lands is noted.

Mixed headstamp brass
CCI LR mag (250) primers

150 FMJBT mil surp pulled bullets
53.5 grains BLC-2
3050 fps on 80 deg. day
1 MOA at 100 yards (trashy bullets)
Seated to touch the lands

Slightly off max load, could go hotter. Simply a "blammo" load for letting someone try a 30-06

168 BTHP Match Hornady
50.2 grains BLC-2
Seated to touch
Good accuracy
Again, could go hotter, accuracy is better about 1 grain off max for some reason. Will try again above book max lists to see if faster node exists within reach.

178 Amax
49.5grains BLC-2
no Velocity data, fired on windy 15F day (wind chill sub zero)
Excellent 300y accuracy, seems to be within 1.5"-1.75" @ 300y
Seated to touch lands
Could go hotter on pressure, accuracy better at 49.5gr than 50 and 50.5 so I went with the more accurate load.

180 JLK VLD's with Long Boat Tail
R-P Brass
CCI 250 primer

49.5gr BLC-2 -- 2675 fps
50.0gr BLC-2 -- 2695 fps

Maybe go hotter, lots of air space, large ES on both loads. Accuracy at .045" jump was 1" at 200y for 50.0gr

Better powder for lighter bullets, not very good for the medium to heavier stuff.

To Come: 175 JLK VLD's, will shoot them with H4350 instead of BLC-2 next

Re: Loads for 30-06

Does anyone plan on using RL-17 in '06? In the 6mmbr article on RL-17 they mentioned that it may surpass RL-22 as THE powder for heavy bullets in '06. I'm interested to see what it can do with 208/210s.

Re: Loads for 30-06

Tried it.

Too much air in the case resulting in wandering ES's. That being said it did get velocities up into the 2850 range but the 30+ fps wanderings were troublesome.

I went back to RE-22 in the 06.

Now in 308 I've been messing with 190's, 208's and 210' with damn near amazing results. Have to do more testing before going public but there is magic in them granules. Wondering about my Wizzum next as that is what it was designed for.

To the OP:

210 Berger & 208 Amax, Win cases, FGMM 210 primers, RE-22 @ 60.0 gr will net you nirvana at the long lines. IMR-4350 is not a bad choice in the lighter boolets but has much air space.

Cheers,

Doc

I was using up some SMK 175's and IMR-4895 that I had left over from when I had a .308, and came across this load.
I started out trying to duplicate 1968 LC Match (47.0gr. IMR-4895).
Anyway, very accurate at 1-200yds. several .3 5shot groups @ 100.
I will chrono. and test further at next opportunity.

This is my "girlfriend load" for letting my girlfriend or sissy's shoot a "big bore" rifle. Very little recoil. Also works good for sighting in after any major work is done on a rifle. Cheap as dirt, runs about $0.11 per load.

Re: Loads for 30-06

Yep, I just need some more time to sit down and load a bunch. I'm planning a long range deer hunt this year out to 600 yards and I need some more practice in various conditions with the load to see exactly what I get.

The only group I fired at 600 was 5 shots in 13-15 mph winds, switching directions and I managed to keep it in 2" vertical and 3.5" wide. I was pretty pleased.

They sure do, the first day was 16 rounds, I had a bruised shoulder and my neck hurt from it. My chiropractor goes "wtf did you do to yourself this weekend?"

I've contemplated getting a brake for my 30-06 if I'm going to continue shooting these things.

Re: Loads for 30-06

Yea I stopped shooting mine until I get it restocked and muzzle brake on mine.

Doh! Oh well, at least it was meat on the table.

Re: Loads for 30-06

Just curious to How many loadings can you get with 59-60gr of RL 22 under the 208 amax before your primer pockets get loose or other signs that the brass isn't good anymore?

I'm on my 4th so far, the 60.0gr get 2, the 60.5 get 1 load before you hammer the bolt open.

Re: Loads for 30-06

gotcha, i figured the loads are pretty warm, I tried a load at 59gr and get slight ejector marks on my case head, but easy bolt lift and easy extraction. Maybe I have a hot lot of RL22??
22" nitrided barrel, win brass, cci200, RL 22 59.0 gr 2740fps, .25-1/2moa groups average with good brass. I took some of the brass that were flyers out and the groups shrank significantly.

I'm debating backing down the load but it's shooting so well at this load. I'm on the 4th loading right now.

Re: Loads for 30-06

My '06 loads are intended to be Garand compatible.

150/155SMK, 50gr IMR-4064
168SMK, 49.0gr IMR-4064
175/180SMK, 48.0gr IMR-4064

These loads are just shy of Sierra's published max for these bullets. I find that my Garand and my M70 lightweight sporter both work well enough with these loads. I simply substitute SGK's of similar weights for hunting loads.

Hunter/battlerifle performance is my goal.

Greg

Re: Loads for 30-06

Greg, I put an adjustable gas plug on my Garand. Even with the LC M2 ball, I can get the brass to land in a neat pile next to me instead of ALL OVER. I hope it will let the old thing last a little longer and maybe even let me load more along the lines of published "book" loads. Probably not legal for some matches though.

Re: Loads for 30-06

I don't use my Garand for matches anymore.

Since my left arm and shoulder injury back in early 2005, I am unable to employ a match sling, despite years of working at it.

Now I keep it and shoot it for fun and 'just in case'.

I've replaced the butt plate with a 1" extension, and mounted a hooded ring front sight and .052" N/M rear with 1/2MOA clicks.

The battle sight markings are right on with the metal gongs at 100yd and 200yd, and that's plenty good enough for the likes of me.

There's always 80rd or so loaded up in clips, handy/ready to rock.

Old soldiers die hard...

Bartlien 1-10 twist barrel (M24 contour) 25" from the lug.

53.9 Grains H4350
3.434 COAL
Fed Brass
Fed 210 Primer
208 Amax

Really consistent load and it hammers, my most accurate load to date.

I don't know how long the FGMM 168's run in factory ammo.

The 178 and 208's that I shoot are going to be different from everyone else unless we all load to magazine length.

Even then, it can be different, I know that Onemoretime's rifle uses 300 WM magazines and he can load out to 3.6" or more. Mine is built on a Mauser so I have to keep them at 3.2" or so to feed from the mag. I don't like that, so I just single feed them.

If you're OK to single feed them then the OAL of my ammo isn't important, you need to figure out where the bullets should be seated in your loads for your rifle.

If you want to feed them from the magazine, then you just measure how long of a round will fit in your magazine, take 10 thou off that length, and load 'em all to that, assuming they still chamber without touching the lands. If they do touch the lands at that length then you have some more work to do.

Mine run 3.405" to keep them 10-15 thou off the lands.

My 178's run 3.37" for the same 10 thou IIRC

Re: Loads for 30-06

Just curious guys, I have 155gr scenars, 210 VLD's and Lapua 185gr D-46's.....

Has anybody worked up a load for the D-46's?

The virgin brass I have is, Win, Norma and Lapua....and some 1x fired Rem, BHA and Win

Just need to get powder and find some primers...

Re: Loads for 30-06

I am currently seeing my 208s at 2700fps using 56gr of IMR 4350, no pressure signs at this point.
I have a 26" 1-10 twist Hart barrel with a JP Enterprise brake.
Mil surplus brass and CCI BR2 primers--COAL to fit in the detachable mag.
I'm wondering how much more is available from 4350 or would I just be better off switching to RL22 Ive read as many of the posts as I can find but most folks aren't using mil brass and I dont have the luxury of quick load. Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Loads for 30-06

Just and FYI, I shot the 59.5gr50.5gr of RL22 at 200y and it ran 7/8" wide, by 1/4" high at 200y yesterday. 208 Amax with RL 22 or RL17 is the way to run from 30-06!

EDIT: Noticed incorrect charge weight.

Barrel length?

My '06 project is finally under way and I have 15lbs RL-17 and am wondering whether to go with it or pick up some RL22 and go for loading long (close to 3.6) and extend the throat since it takes so much more RL22 to get the velocity up there.

Re: Loads for 30-06

Can you guys put up a list of good non-temp sensitive powders for the -06?

Thanks

Re: Loads for 30-06

H4350 is the golden standard of temp insensitive powder. It will work marvelously from 175-200gr bullets, even at 210's it gives good velocities, but they're not quite as good as RL22.

I've never used RL17 in it yet, so I can't tell you. RL22 is definitely temp sensitive though.

Re: Loads for 30-06

Good brass, Winchester and Luppy are a bit better. That said, if you don't want it, put it up for sale, some one will want it.

One of the reasons I shoot the Garand matches, to get the LC brass cause it works for me.

Re: Loads for 30-06

Anyone know the length on new Lapua -06 brass (I plan on trimming my win brass to these specs).

Re: Loads for 30-06

Mine measured around 2.486-2.487
