What instruments would a person need to for shooting long distance ,so that you could make proper elevation and windage adjustments for accurate shot placement?

Re: long distance shooting equiptment

You will need an instrument or instruments which measure atmopheric pressure, temperature, and relative humidity for long shots. (Humidity may be ignored at 1000 yards or less.)

A Kestrel will also measure wind speed. However, it only measures the wind speed where it is - so having that wind speed is not sufficient to calculate wind effect at long range, because the wind varies.

A Kestrel is useful, though, for learning to estimate wind speed at the shooter's location, which he will often have to do without the Kestrel while actually shooting.

Other than the wind, a Kestrel is not really necessary. Several watches have pressure sensors adequate for atmospheric pressure, and a cheap thermometer is sufficent for temperature.

Well define long distance and the type of shooting you are thinking about. Is this competition, hunting, plinking?

Re: long distance shooting equiptment

The application would be for hunting

Re: long distance shooting equiptment

a reliable Laser range finder for long distance would be helpful.

Re: long distance shooting equiptment

a solid tactical style scope with a good amount of internal adjustment. good reticle for quickly holding over elevation and holding wind.

a laser range finder (LRF) will make your life alot easier past 300 yards when rounds start to drop off. make sure if you go down this road you sort out a ballistic chart for your projectile so the distance will equate to something otherwise it'll just spit out a range and wont help you much.

I would suggest the Kestral, range finder ir use mildot and a handheld like an Itouch for a ballistics program .

Brass - bullets - gun powder & work on your technique. You can have all the extra equipment & gizmos in the world; however, if they won't replace good technique & practice.

Re: long distance shooting equiptment

I agree with some of the ones above. For hunting after you have found a good load and know how your gun shoots from say 100 to whatever you consider will be your longest shot a rangefinder will be your best piece of equipment to get first. If you have your settings at known distances either in your head, notepad or sticky on your stock or scope you can range the animal and do a quick adjustment or decision on which plex to use and that will put you on target the fastest.

If you are planning on shooting somthing small like prairie dogs at 1000 yards then temperature and other factors are also important but knowing your gun and how it shoots at known distances and knowing what distant the target is would be my top priority to get started the fastest. Quality trigger time with even a stock type weapon that you are really familiar with can be better than a ton of money spent on something you don't understand and haven't gotten to become friends with.

Nice way of putting it.
