Anyone have a major opinion one way or the other on the Vortex Viper PST Gen I vs Gen II. I am looking at the Gen I in 6-24x50 vs the Gen II 5-25X50 both in FFP MilRad. There are a couple of great sales on these and I am wondering if the Gen II is worth 1.5 x the price...

I have both and I think the Gen 2 is worth the price. Glass is noticably better, turrets are more to my liking and the zero stop is dirt simple. But it's very noticeably heavier. The illumination control on the Gen 1 is ugly but much more ergonomic in my opinion.

Also, if you get the EBR2-C reticle the whole thing illuminates including the Christmas tree portion on the Gen 1. The Christmas tree portion does not illuminate on the Gen 2. It does on the Razor but not the PST.

I agree with Paul above, while I didn't have the PST 6-24 I did have the PST 4-16 and I have the PST II 5-25 and have used the PST II 3-15x44 and both are much better scopes than the PST 4-16 in every way. The PST II 3-15x44 is the "sweet spot" for the PST II line and offers outstanding IQ for a scope at its price, the 5-25 is not far behind but does suffer a bit at the higher mags, not enough to make a difference though as I use it with my 17HMR and have never had any issues with clarity when it counts.

While I didn't get to handle the Gen I and Gen II side by side, I've shot both pretty recently. I'm very happy I went with a Gen II for my latest scope (in MOA). Like the poster above said, the Gen II features make enough of a difference to make the bump, especially the turrets. I wish I had them side by side to tell the difference in glass clarity/brightness, but have not had a chance to test that yet. Reviews from others seem to indicate the Gen II is noticeably better. Having said that, the Gen I can be hard to pass up for the price you can now find them used.
