Rifle Scopes Looking for a Good Coyote Scope

I'm in the market for a good coyote scope for EASTERN coyote hunting (the reason I mention it is because eastern coyote hunting and western coyote hunting are different sports).

Shots more than 200 yards are few and far between, and most shots are within 60-75 yards. Most of our stands are in the woods and the action is quick.

I'm looking for something that will be quick in target acquisition, top end magnification under 6x, and rugged.

I'm looking to spend under $500, though I'm a bit flexible if there is something really good.

I'll be switching around depending on my hunting partner. Sometimes rifle, others turkey gun.

Well, in that case let me add that I was in your same position. After running a 1-4 on my AR for quite a while I'm now changing my view.

The 1-4 on mine stayed on 4x ALL THE TIME... and I was in a few situations that I would have liked to crank up the mag.

If I needed lower magnification, I never had time to crank it down.

Thus, going forward I'm going to run a 4-12 or 4-16 with a reflex dot mounted at 1:30 for the close up stuff.

I do a lot of coyote hunting (I'm in the west..so I guess its western?). Within 200 yards, I prefer my m4ergy with the Trijicon Accupoint 1-4x (tr24). Awesome glass, simple triangle reticle which I use like a red dot. For under 100 yards, it works perfect at 1x with '2 eye open' target acquisition. You can find them for a little more than $600 if you look around (especially if you are linked to any sort of govt agency).

I actually own that scope with the Green Triangle reticle, and I'm just not sure that it's precise enough for little coyote vitals. If I'm going to use a Trijicon 1-4x, I'd MUCH rather have the German #4 Green Dot.

Re: Looking for a Good Coyote Scope

My 16" RRA "coyote" has a NF 2-1/2-10 on it. I know that's way over the price range you have, but consider a 3-9 or 3-10 variable with features you like.

Re: Looking for a Good Coyote Scope

Might look at an Eotech as another option. I switch back and forth on my doggin rig between the red dot and a 6- 24x. Recently, I had 7 dogs coming in at the same time, all of which were within 300 yds. I had the Eotech mounted at this time and am very glad I did. Much faster than the scope.

Goog luck with the dogs.

Re: Looking for a Good Coyote Scope

Another poster suggested a Nitrex tr2 scope at Natchez. Have a couple of the Nitrex tr2 scopes from them and they are very good scopes with optics that are quite clear and bright.

Here is another Nitrex scope, but a TR1 model which is comparable to Weaver Classic Vs or Grand Slams. Sorry, it is wayyyyyyyy under your budget but has a power range you'll like. Did retail for over $250 once, but with rebate cost is now about $80. Its worth a look.

+1

If I didn't think a 1-4x was such a perfect option, I'd go with an EoTech on the m4. AR in 16" (or less) with a low power scope is a perfect yote gun

To the above..I have my triangle zeroed at the tip. I find it more than precise enough for yotes.

After taking my TR24G (Trijicon Accupoint 1-4x with Green Triangle) and looking at it on neighborhood dogs (no, the scope was NOT mounted to a gun - gotta love QD mounts!), I agree. It should work GREAT for hunting close range coyotes in the woods. The reticle, as you said, should be more than capable of being precise enough to tag coyotes, even at distance.

I'm going to give it a shot (since I already have it).

I'm also very likely going to get a SS 1-4x HD (Donut reticle) when I sell a couple of things and either use it on a coyote gun or as my primary SHTF gun.

Thanks all for the input.

The brain trust strikes again.
