Looking for a Good Tactical Tripod

I am looking for a sturdy tactical tripod that will be suitable for prone shooting. I have an old Davis and Sanford that I am thinking about cutting down, but really do not want to do that.

I also have a Bogen 3021 that has the feature to basically lay flat so I am thinking of making short legs for it....but if I can find a good tripod I will not cut up/modify my good tripods.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Contact Precision Rifle Solutions. The owner is here on the Hide(platypus) and Danel and his wife are great to deal with. I have a small PRS tripod for prone shooting, and I love it.

Here is mine with my 18# rifle on it.

Good luck with your search.

Yep...the PRS Tripods are EXCELLENT products from a man who knows what customer service/satisfaction is all about.

I have used both the small and medium tripods extensively and I highly recommend the medium for all your general shooting needs. With it grounded, the medium will get VERY short (around 6-7") and will extend up to around 42" or so. Just pick the cradle that best suits your particular rifles (SSP-1 is the more narrow cradle for use with the HS Precision/PSS stocks, McM A1, A2, A3, etc. stocks while the SSP-2 is the wider cradle for stocks like the A5, Manners T4/T5, TRG, etc.).

Give Danel a call or an e-mail, tell him what you are looking for, and he'll help you find the product that will best suit your needs.

Re: Looking for a Good Tactical Tripod

The PRS medium is based on a SLIK mini tripod and IMHO it's a bit weak for holding up a 15-20lb rifle with any of the legs extended at all. So long as you only want it for prone then it would be fine. There aren't a lot of choices out there for tripods that are short AND strong AND verstile but if you want the cadillac then look here:

That's a bit rich for my blood, though, so you might consider this:

Re: Looking for a Good Tactical Tripod

I'm looking for a tripod that is tall, for groundhog shooting in tall grass. The grass is so high sometimes that we have to shoot standing. Does PRS make a sturdy tall tripod that extends over 3-4ft?

Re: Looking for a Good Tactical Tripod

No disagreements with Ratbert on the high quality of the Manfrotto Mini Low Boy units...they are VERY nice and the price isn't awful (like the price on the $400 RRS Ground Pod). BUT...I disagree that the PRS medium isn't HD enough for use with a heavy (18lb+) rifle when the legs are extended. I have used mine sitting/kneeling with a heavy rifle and found it to be very stable/usable. Granted...it isn't as stable or heavy duty as my 055XPROB (which I have used with the PRS cradle too), but it isn't unstable or inadequate by any means.

PRS makes a "Large" version of their tripods that grounds at around 8" and extends up to over 5' tall. I have not used the Large tripod so I cannot speak about its stability, etc., but I am sure that there are folks here who have used them that can comment.

Re: Looking for a Good Tactical Tripod

Thank you gentlemen for your support. There is no doubt that there are several high quality tripods on the market. I went with the SLIK models not just for a reasonable price but because I carried an older model for over 11 years and still use it today to include regular range work and some SWAT competitions, granted it is ugly and wearing several coats of paint. The SLIK medium and large are hard to beat for versatility (medium ~7" prone to 43" kneeling and the large ~7" prone to 63" standing), durability, lightweight and ease of set up in a compact package. A camp stool and a medium or large makes for a fun filled day of shooting gophers and rock chucks. The QD ball heads with an additional plate make for an easy transition from shooting platform to an observation platform without having to make up any threaded connections. I put the 45# plate weight on the large at its full extension out of curiosity and had no failures of the locking mechanisms or the materials of construction. My heavy .308 weighs in at 20 lbs and I have not had a single issue with the tripod not supporting the rifle. Is it as stable as shooting prone? No, but I found when working in the real world getting a good prone position rarely happens. There are several testimonials of folk’s consistently making some long range shots off of our SSP cradles mounted on these SLIK tripods as well as other tripods. Is it the answer to all shooting situations? No, but it certainly is a valuable tool to have and a damn sight better than trying to make shots off-hand. Please do not hesitate to PM, email [email protected] , or give me a call with any questions you may have. If you already have a tripod, the SSP-1 and SSP-2 cradles are available by themselves and can be made with a threaded insert that allows either 3/8”x16 thread make up or standard tripod threads of ¼”x20.

Here are a couple of links to some other threads that may be helpful in deciding what you need and/or want.
