Guys, I have been looking for days on the web for a brush/short range optics. I first thought about a red dot with a mag. But then started looking into the 1-?X? scopes. I havn't had the chance to look through one of these scopes but I wonder how it compares to a red dot. Being able to zoom it it does sound nicer then a red dot.

If the scope is the route I am going to take, the Sightmark 1-6x24 (Gen2 I think) or Bushnell Elite 1.25-4x 24mm. I really like the reticle on the Sightmark but can't find any reviews. The Bushnell only lights up the dot which doesn't give me a warm and fuzz.

Trying to keep it within $350.

This will be going on an AK. Thanks guys.

In that price range I'd stay with a red dot or a fixed 4x. The variables do neither end well until you drop some more coin.

Re: Looking for brush/ 200 yard scope....

I recently went through this same research, albeit for a Ruger 10/22, and not an AK. As an owner of the 1-4x Super Sniper HD, I wanted something similar on my 22LR. but without the price tag.

After sorting out all the Chinese variants, I settled on the Filipino-made Burris MTAC 1-4x (which is a close cousin of the $300 Burris TAC30 1-4x). Unfortunately when I received it, I was unpleasantly surprised with the glass quality. Mine had significant distortion around the entire FOV perimeter. Acquiring multiple targets while on 1x gave me the impression I was looking through a clown mirror in the way the target background would warp and ungulate through the scope's FOV. I just couldn't do it. I guess I'm spoiled by the HD glass on the Super Sniper. I ended up returning the Burris.

I decided to take a risk on a Weaver Super Slam, which admittedly gets very little press around here. It is a 1-5x24mm scope , with covered target turrets (1/4 MOA) and a 30mm tube. It has zero bells and whistles however. No illumination, and only a Plex reticle. The main reason I risked it was because the Super Slam line is made in Japan at Light Optical Works, the same place rumored to make the Super Sniper HD line. I wanted another scope with respectable glass.

The scope I received was certainly no disappointment. It is true 1x, and the glass quality is absolutely outstanding. It is on par with my 1-4x Super Sniper HD. It appears that Weaver sank all of its costs on this scope into the glass, saving costs only by leaving out the bell and whistle upgrades.

Unfortunately it isn't a "tactical" scope, so I'm not sure if you'd consider it an AK, but if you do, I promise you'll love the quality.

If you buy one before the end of the year, Weaver is also offering a $50 mail-in rebate.

I do like the sound of the Weaver. The only thing its missing for me is a illuminated reticle. Thanks for the review. Will look again at the Weaver line.

I've been happy with my leatherwood cmr for $250. The only problem with it is that the illumination isn't that bright, no way it'll show up on a sunny day. Works against shadows on a cloudy day just fine for me.

Luppy FX-3 6x42 is also a great choice.
