Hey all - As the title says, I'm interested in taking some gunsmithing or potentially machining courses in or around Houston. I am a prior service long range shooter with an engineering degree, so I'm pretty tech savvy and understand the lingo - but I would like to continue learning. I would like to learn how to build bolt actions from blanks, turn barrels, etc.... Any suggestions that would get me pointed in the right direction are greatly appreciated.

Are you wanting to learn a new hobby or trying to make money doing it? If it's a hobby I would take machining courses and buy a capable lathe for practice at home. There are hundreds of youtube videos that will show you how others do it. If you want to become a gunsmith I would still take the machining courses but then find a reasonably respected smith that would take you in as an apprentice. You will learn from experience. Schooling will never replace experience!

Mostly hobbying right now, it would be great if I were eventually able to make some money doing something like this - but starting out I would just like to pick up some tricks of the trade. Looks like local community colleges offer courses in Machining Technology or Manufacturing Engineering Technology. I'm going to reach out to the dept heads and see which would be more applicable and see what I can make happen.

Maybe I'll make some contact along the way and be able to pick up a part time weekend apprenticeship - thanks for the advice.
