As the topic title says, I am looking for my 1st big bore rifle. For many reasons I have decided on the .308 for the chambering. I have recommendations of Bergara, Tikka,Mossberg,Savage and Remington. From what I have been able to glean from the net all have their own following and seem like nice rifles.

I don't get a chance to buy a new rifle very often so my choice has to be one of no later regret.

I like the Tikka T3X TAC A1 most I think except the proprietary magazines and the $$$. Second is the Bergara B14 BMP, third is the Savage 10 BA Stealth followed by the Mossberg MVP LC. The Remington is only on the list For no good reason as I have seen such a lack of quality in the past several years. I have a 700 and love it, but it was also made in the early 90s.What I have been seeing in the stores lately horrifies me.

I am anticipating a windfall of 1500.00 this fall plus whatever I can shore up with it. This will be my all around rifle. long range shooting, varmint, med size game, mid and short range target and plinking as well as load development.

As far as glass goes I may have to borrow from another rifle til I can adequately top the 30.

I am interested in any pros and cons with the brands or specific arms mentioned. I realize a few of these are really new and may have very little hands on experience.
Thx in advance..

I have several years experience shooting the Savage 11VT .223, available as a proprietary model from Dick's Sporting goods. Currently on sale for $399, this is an astounding value for a ready-scoped rifle that has essentially all the needed features for an entry-level factory LR accuracy rifle. I have another in .308, and will be acquiring a third one in 308 to serve as a platform upon to which to mount a 28" L-W 260 drop-in barrel.

The package Bushnell 4-12x40 scope is OK for getting started, and will serve well on a hunter or rimfire after replacing it with a more capable scope, and I would upgrade to a Mueller 8-32x44 Target or Tactical Scope for real precision work. I have had two of these scopes in service for training and comp for going on five years now, and they work well and hold up. An EGW 20MOA Base and Vortex 6-screw rings are what I use with these rifles. The side focus/parallax features provides a very desirable capability.

This setup is becoming my standard factory rifle for rest/bipod shooting from a bench at known distances. It is chosen for the features it provides, for an economical cash outlay, and for proven performance in my own hands over some years of training and competitive shooting. The .223 competed in the Berger SW LR Nationals this past February in the MR 600yd stage, and did everything I expected from it.

The literally identical interchangeability of the .223 and .308 allow for representative training at shorter distances, with an MR competition capability with the .223, and a 1000yd capability with the .308, with both chamberings and rifles being perfectly legal for F T/R comp. You could buy both and scope them for less than your $1500 budget.

Don't let the economical pricetag scare you away. This setup is my goto rifle package, and would serve you very well for your starter outfit. You could do far worse at several times this price.

I will have to look into these when I get back on my pc. This phone sucks for viewing much of anything b in detail. On another note, would it be beneficial to buy a receiver and quality barrel and build my own?
It proves to save a lot of cash on the AR platform.
