I have a FN Scar 17s that I need a optic for. I will usually only be shooting at 100-200 yard range. But sometimes will go to a range that has 100-1000 yard. I will be adding a Red Dot at the 1 o'clock position for CQ.

Here is what I am looking at so far. I have only read about these on the forum. I have not had a chance to look at any in person, so I would appreciate your experience in any of these optics.

IOR Valdada 2-12X32 Scope SF Tactical Scope w/ Illuminated MP8 Reticle

Nightforce NXS 2.5-10x32mm

Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24 Rifle Scope TMCQ MOA PST-14ST-A

1.5-8x26 35mm TRIDENT .308 Cam with Illuminated CQB/BDC reticule

If you have any others that you think would be a great option. Please let me know.

Re: Looking for Optic for Scar 17s

The Daniel Defense 1 O’clock Offset Rail is optimized for mounting miniature red dot optics in the 1 O’clock (right-hand) or 11 O’clock (left-hand) positions for quick, non-magnified, transitions when employing magnified primary optics on AR-type rifles with MIL-STD-1913 rails. The geometry allows for zero cheek-weld shift during the transition. This facilitates very fast transitions from magnified to non-magnified optics, and back. The 1 O’clock Offset Rail can also be used to mount a variety of lights or other accessories that mount to a MIL-STD-1913 rail. By flipping the part upside-down, one can mount a light in a good position for use with a vertical foregrip.

Re: Looking for Optic for Scar 17s

The US Optics SN4 1.5-6 DFP (Dual Focal Plane) would be another good choice for a SCAR 17. 1st Focal 1 mil hash marks for reticle holds, and dialing it in will get you to 700 meters (~765 Yds)- I've tested mine to that distance on an AR SPRish build on a 12" wide gong. 2nd Focal 1 TMOA dot with Segmented Circle works well up close at the 1.5x setting.

It's about the same weight as the NF 2.5-10x32. The NF with 10X on the high end (and a little thinner reticle), would be the better precision optic if 1k is really in the cards. I think that would be stretching things for a 16" SCAR, however.

FWIW, I went with all the bells and whistles (including EREK) since the SN4 DFP was my first USO. The EREK turret is very nice, but out to to 400 meters or so I'm finding reticle holds work very well. Going with one of the standard turrets such as the covered slimline, would serve me just fine.

I think the DD 1 o'clock rail is well made, but I personally don't care for offset optics.

I found I could not use offset optics/irons left handed.

If you go to the Manatee Gun & Archery range, and ask for Range Officer Howard, he (me) usually has a NF 2.5-10x24 out there.

Having looked thru the Vortex 1-4, I think the Super Sniper 1-4 reticle is much better. Consider the Super Sniper 1-4, or perhaps their upcoming 1-6x.

Re: Looking for Optic for Scar 17s

I was looking for amount with less cant. This interests me. I run a T1 on 1 rifle and its fine. But I run an Acog on my other one. I can get down to about 25 yds before it becomes an issue but below 25 I slow down a lot with the Acog. I was wondering about the weak side shooting in a weak side barracade scenario but I was thinking , weak side im going to be slow and have to close my right eye anyway, maybe I could still just use the acog? On my 308 I run an Elcan Specter 1-4 so I dont have that issue there. Anyone ever run the specter and switch to offset and optic or vice versa?

Re: Looking for Optic for Scar 17s

I use a TA11H-308G on mine and am very happy with it. You might want to look at the various 1-4 and 1-8 options too, depending on your budget. You might be able to find a NF compact in your price range.

Re: Looking for Optic for Scar 17s

I have looked at several Acog's. I like them but just want to be able to zoom in closer on the target. Looking at 100-500 yard range with still being able to see the target.
