I dont think I have ever heard that. I have owned many factory Rems with 26" tubes, I currently have a PSS 308 that shoots great with a factory 26" barrel. The 308 isnt a velocity monster, you wont see a huge rediction in velocity going from 26" down to 24", maybee thats were the statement came from.

Re: looking for some opinions...

My brother shoots a 700 sps tactical in 308 with a 20" tube and it usually shoot about 0.6" 100 yard 5 shot groups. one as small 0.375"

Re: looking for some opinions...

Cannot say that I think the 308 favors the shorter barrel. I run a 26" barrel on my 308 and it shoots great. Easily a half MOA gun, but granted it has been put in a new stock and the trigger swapped out. I have a buddy that shoots a 20" 700 chambered in 308 and it groups very well with hand loads. As far as not favoring the 26" barrel I cannot say that I have seen that. It is more that you don't benefit with the longer barrels in terms of speed as you might with some calibers.

Re: looking for some opinions...

The problem with the target/tactical is you are paying a premium for that stupid, completely useless triangular barrel.
You would be far better off buying a milspec 5R. You can always upgrade to the B&C adjustable stock later, you can sell the H&S take off for a couple of hundred, especially an unused one, and buy the B&C for 450 minus the 200 and your talking a substantial savings over the target tactical.
