I’m looking to build a 338 lapua either out of a badger m2013 or a surgeon 1581 xl action in an AI Chassis. My budget is not super great so I would rather buy as many parts or parts rifle used. What are your thoughts on these 2 actions and where would the best place to be to buy used actions /chassis and low round count barrels at? Thanks

LOL! For reals. 338LM is $4+ a round pre COVID. Can't imagine it now. But check the PX. People selling used actions/parts all the time.
If you are short on budget wtf a 338lm?
Lol I sold my 50 bmg, but can’t afford to get into a new rifle/ scope and reloading stuff for the money I got out of it so I’m going as cheap as possible

I bet if you posted a WTB you would have several nice used options to pick from before too long. Used is the way to go for tight budget times IMO.

I had my heart set on a 338 until I starting looking at the prices of everything. Bullets, brass, barrels, actions......everything is big money. 338 is a great cartridge, but past 1000 the big 30's can start making up ground an cost a lot less (300 RUM, 300 PRC, 30 Nosler, 300 Win Mag, 300 Norma mag, ect.). Have you ran the ballistics on these to compare? I understand if you have your heart set on a 338, it gives you the true big boy status. Most of these will fit in a magnum face long action receiver, so you have a lot more options to save money.

I shoot a 7mm mag and it does ok, I had a 50 bmg but the cost of loading for it was high for match ammo. So I’m down scaling to a 338

I have a 7 WSM (28 in 1:8 barrel). It does fine, but is running out of steam around the 1 mile mark. I am working on a 300 PRC because it can keep up with or beat a 338 Lapua at that range (traditional bullets) for a lot less money. That said, it does not have the cool factor of the 338 Lapua.
