Being a big HP Lovecraft fan since I was a teen, I was really excited about this show and over the past couple months it's been really impressive. It's such a weirdly cool hybrid story that weaves together Lovecraftian elements and themes with a story centered around a mid-50s Jim Crow environment. My wife knows nothing of Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos, and she loves it, so I don't think it requires a deep understanding of the Lovecraft side.

It's not a "racial justice beatdown" - there was very real oppression in the South back then and the scenarios fit that environment accurately. But the story is very Lovecraftian with characters drawn into a mystery that leads to occult weirdness, and that story happens to black characters in the Jim Crow era, so it gets meshed together in a weirdly interesting way. It's a pretty complex storyline and there's an entire episode that jumps to tertiary characters all in Korean, so I wouldn't say it's for everyone. I only mentioned it here because my wife loves it and she knows nothing of HP Lovecraft.

Cool--thanks. We've got it recorded--the first reviews were a la "A lesson for our time blah blah blah", but if its set in Jim Crow era--history is history. Plus evil squids. I should have remembered they said the same thing about Watchmen, which I found very good. My wife is a big Horror fan, I'm not, but it sounds like different enough to check out.

    Thanks again.

If you liked HBO's "Watchmen" then you'll probably like this. There's a lot of similarities to the style and feel between the two. My only gripe is that the Shuggoths aren't anything like the ones Lovecraft described.
