Racking my brain trying to determine what optic I need and hoped someone here could offer more advice.
This rifle is my do all rifle first focus is deer hunting, so light transmission and enough magnification to evaluate game is a must. Then it shares duty as a truck/run and gun pig rifle, a all light varmint hunting rifle and finally a 600 yard range plinking rifle in the summer.
Budget would be great to stay in the $400-600 range.
If the midway 5-15 HS was only $399 I would have already ordered it but at $499 I'm hesitant.
Scope features
30mm tube already have rings so would save me a buck
I like a mildot or better version reticle
When I had the vortex the zero stop to me was nice
I don't think any FFP scopes are in my immediate budget so I hadn't worried a out that.
Weight as the rifle is already over 8# empty and carrying it a mile or more gets old.
Illumination I'm on the fence(seems nice but not sure it's worth the $1-200 price jump)
All of the scopes I've looked at dont quite seem to meet the needs at least with my budget
Leupold old vx-r 3-9 Boring lower heard some mixed reviews still not sure where the glass ranks with light transmission and clarity
SWFA 3-9x42 great features, really don't understand the need for FFP on such a lower power scope but it has tons of adjustment. Also used here much closer to $400. The major thing holding me back is glass clarity compared to the vortex HS from midway.
Midway viper 5-15 good magnification range, mil/mil, 75 moa of elevation. Zero stops clarity is nice but less so if you look outside the center of the scope side focus. Great turrent feel. However a bit bulky for a 16" AR, non illuminated, and the last one I bought I only gave $399 for. It will go on sale again I'm sure but I need the rifle setup sooner.
Finally the 2.5-10 viper PST. Similar glass and features to the viper with added illumination. Not sure how the clarity compares to the VX-r but identical price point. PST has the zero stops and a bit wider Mag range.
Or something else.
I'd love to find something that does more for cheaper but has to meet the expectations above.
The weaver line seems close but not sure if the glass is in the same ball park as those mentioned above.
