Re: LR-308 Build flash hider recommendation wanted
2shot & BCP,
Y'all need to indicate your intended use of said weapons in order to get more germane responses.
If the intended use of the AR involves a lot of late evening/twilight applications, then a pure flash suppressor probably works better.
If on the other hand, the intended use of the AR is only occasional late evening hunts/shoots, then you are probably better served with a flash suppressing compensator.
Compared to a pure flash hider, the flash suppressing compensator offers you recoil reduction (very model dependent), faster follow-up shots and flash reduction akin to an A2 flash hider.
All said, activities such as late night/early morning hog hunts are becoming very popular...a pure flash hider may be more desirable so that you can preserve your night vision after each pull of the trigger. However, this benefit comes with the trade off of recoil reduction and faster follow-up shots.
I have a BABC compensator on my 16" AR and a PWS FSC30 on my 20" upper. I have never noticed any amount of flash that is enough to worry about. Of the two, i recommend the FSC30. It provides better recoil recduction, the same level of flash suppression and costs half as much.
I just watched the video posted by Killshot. Take that video with a grain of salt, as it is not applicable to your respective scenarios. That video is comparing the flash reduction of an FSC556 model in an obscenely short barreled 556 rifle.
The amount of flash produced by your 16" 308AR will definitely be less...i know, because i have shot my 16" AR with no muzzle device, and with both the BABC and the FSC30. There is almost no flash in my rilfe now. The only time it produces noticeable flash (very small, and is restricted to your peripheral vision) is with cheap, crappy Russian ammo. I'm sure that if i cahnge my reloads such that i utilize a slower burning powder, it will also produce plenty of flash, however, such a powder is not ideal in a 16" 308.
Hope this helps.
