So I'm out dicking around in the shop working up some loads for my ar-15. I have 25 rounds loaded with a bullet/powder combo that wasn't quite what I wanted. I loaded up my O.C.W. with all the same c.b.t.o. so I thought why not use the 25 rounds I'm not happy with and use them for trying out different bullet jump to the lands and maybe get a head start when I'm done with the O.C.W.
They are all short of what I want so I us my kinetic puller to ease the projectiles out a ways then reseat to the length I want. Things are going well until one goes off!W.T.F. After I collected my thoughts I see that the primer is gone and the projectile is still seated in the casing , I finish pulling the bullet and out it comes with all the powder.
I'm guessing that when the primer went off all the powder was at the other end of the casing and didn't ignite. What would have happened if the powder did ignite?Would it have built enough pressure to dislodge the bullet? would it always blow the primer out and have that as a pressure relief? I believe the primer was probably distorted when I primed the casing as every so often I don't get all the factory crimp removed and they don't slide in as nice as the should ( Yes my mistake).

How the hell did you manage to do that I wonder. I can't even count how many cartridges I've pulled apart with a hammer. Must have been something screwy with ther primer maybe?

I'm thinking, if it did ignite the powder, it probably would have blown the cartridge and puller apart. Just a guess though.

The primer anytime it goes off, it tries to exit the case. Weak link, bolt face holds the primer in. This is why primers should never be used as a pressure guideline, especially on new brass, cases are short, lot of room for movement.
A case needs support to generate pressure. I could not say if the bullet would dislodge in this scenario. I need to throw some ammo in a fire sometime, lol
But I would put a good deal of money on that you would have gotten a neat flame out the cap of the puller had the powder ignited.

Mythbusters did that a long time ago. Because the case weighs much less than the projectiles, usually, the case is becomes the projectile lol.

I thought about the primer exiting, but the flash hole is pretty small. A lot of energy still in the case I would think

But not with enough force to break the oven window, it was a cool episode.
Cant find it so Ill leave this here instead

Take a primed empty case, put it in a vise, take a torch to the base of it. Primer is coming out.

My buddy's garage burned down in the Paradise Ca. fire. He had 4 .50 cal. ammo cans full of different ammo stacked in the corner and when he was allowed to return he checked out the boxes and all the ammo had went off but was all contained in the ammo cans.

Not disputing that. But just saying, I am pretty sure there is still enough pressure in the case to rupture it, even with the primer out. The flash hole is small so its venting pressure slower than its building.

You may be right, I misunderstood you. I doubt I'd care to be in the room if it happens.

When I was a kid I blew up and set off lots of cartridges.
They pretty much just separated or split the case.
Parts never went far
Shotgun cases sometimes got spooky from flying plastic.
Lol, I put old gunpowder in baggies and throw in a fire pit, gets hairy. Fast powder goes quick and almost straight up, slower powders send flame your way on the way up.

Yea, that shotgun/pistol powder goes poof right quick!
Black powder was fun to play with as well.
how I survived childhood without maiming or blinding myself is Still puzzling
A cows kick did end any aspirations of me being in the military though.

I like gasoline too, wonder I have never torched a building for fun. If I ever make cocktails, i'll want some powder in the bottle too.
