Ok I have been a bolt ripper for a very long time.I have always said I would just trust my 22Lr for putting out lead when needed. So now I find myself looking at an AR style rifle.

I like bull barrel rifes for bolt guns,( mine are varment barrels ) not really a bull. But I like the bigger barrel,to this is why I am looking at the M&P15 PC.I really don't want one with the handle,I like the slick top for a nice scope.I want really be useing it that much for cover shooting or match, but will shoot it from time to time at the range. Its main purpose will be for hunting coyotes and hogs.

I plan to load for it since it has a 1:8 twist with 80gn or so bullets. So loading tips will be a plus when offered. So can ya'll help me out or drive me to a better choice,( thats if I can still by one these days ) The site ( S&W price is at $1509.00 so keep it close or better ) for this is a comfortable price for me.

Sorry for the lack of not being into an Ar,for I love a bolt rifle. But really need the Pros and cons to hwat I am trying to get into.I know that most or many will be able to help me,so here I am asking the pros.

and thank for helping me out ahead of time...John

Re: M&P15 PC Pros and Cons please

I will start by saying S&W does a great job with their AR's. Quality is up there with other high end companies. I don't have any experience with that particular rifle, though. Secondly, being able to find any AR in stock right now is uncommon, to say the least. I would definitely pick one of those up if you found one in stock.

When handloading for an AR, you're restricted to "magazine length" ammunition. Basically this means your COAL cannot exceed 2.260" unless you want to single feed. This also means you won't be able to shoot long 80gr+ bullets, 75gr AMAX's, or some of the 70gr+ Berger VLD's.

I have one. It's definitely a sub moa semi. The 2 stage trigger is really nice with a bit of take up in the first stage, then breaks clean and light in the second. Yankee Hill free float tube is a nice feature along with the stainless barrel and YH low profile gas block. The only thing I didn't like was the A2 stock which was replaced with a PRS. The upper and lower lock up nice and tight together, not loose like a dpms. No complaints here.

What is "cover shooting"?

Don't bother with 80's out of an AR platform unless you want to single load. 77's or 69's will get you where you want to go out of the magazine. Much info in the reloading sub forum for data.

S&W makes a very good rifle. Good luck finding one FS for a decent price.

Re: M&P15 PC Pros and Cons please

Not a lot of M&P15 PC guns out there before all the craziness; even less now. The barrels on the PC guns are "Match Grade" from one of the more well known barrel makers. As stated already, forget the really long bullets for an AR. The magazines just can't handle them.

Re: M&P15 PC Pros and Cons please

I had one of the first M&P Performance Center guns they made. Had a Walthar 1:8 that shot 69 SMK's very well. The upper and lower were forged by Sun Devil (no forward assist), and were very distinctive guns. I paid $1700 for that gun about 7 years ago. Have not run across another one since!

I sold it and have been building AR's that shoot just as good or better. That might be your best bet right now. You can get a Nordic/Wilson 18" barrel that will shoot right with that Lowar Walther, for not a bunch of money. I used some JP barrel's and components last summer, and those also shot very nice.

Re: M&P15 PC Pros and Cons please

Smith makes a solid AR. I have an M&P15 with just a regular 16" military style barrel and I can get 1" to 1.5" groups at 100 yards all day long with it. The PC variant should easily get sub MOA groups.

Re: M&P15 PC Pros and Cons please

Hey thanks guys I really hope I can find one.Yeah I will be hand feeding the 80gn bullets for bench shooting.

I am from the back woods of SC so cover shooting is spray and pray shooting when in a hot cross fire.Sorry for that,I really ment spray and pray shooting.

Yes,I too plan to use 69gn bullets for most of my shooting. With it having a 1:8 twist I just thought I would try the 75-80gn bullets for really long shots.

As said before we are having a pig and yot problem in our area. With me being a bolt guy I found its too hard to shoot as fast as an AR can.My biggest thing was always around the idea of being able to shoot a lot from an AR type rifle. When I am at the range I can pull a trigger all day.To this is why I haven't bought one yet.Feeding my bolt rifles is bad enough for me.Now with the pigs and yots I'll feed one for the fun and meat for the frez.( pig only )

Yes,S&W does make a great pistol, for this is why I chose them for an AR style rifle.A basic barrel might be all I need, but having varment barreled rifles already, for this reason I have chose to want one in an AR.

Yes,building one might be a second choice for me,but rather take a chance to finding one already together first. If for any reason I cannot find one I might be asking for a parts list.

When loading for one,do I have to crimp the bullets in all the time.I am thinking for bench shooting no,but for pig and yot hunting yes.If so I'll need a crimp die,but not to worried about it,just need to order one.

Again thanks for the replies,I am out in left field when it comes to an AR.But I have shot a few to know what I am getting into.( hint more money spent to own one LOL )
