I am proud to say that I own an M1 and I love shooting it. The only problem is The ammo selection I've been seeing a bunch of foreign bulk stuff which is old and I'm worried it will mess my gun up. Any body own a garand that can help me?
Submit your paperwork to the CMP and buy the Greek surplus HXP ammo they are selling. Cheapest ammo you will find and it is perfectly safe for your Garand.
The CMP also sells Hornady M1 Garand match ammo, more expensive but good M2 clone ammo with better bullets than surplus.
Save your brass and save money for the next step - reloading.
Owning a Garand was the #2 reason why I started reloading my own shells, the #1 reason being a desire for more accurate ammo vs mass produced. Otherwise, the Greek surplus seems to be the best overall value out there for Garands, but it does have a steel core bullet. Just be sure to keep your brass.
Handloading for the garand is easy. 30-06 recipes with win 748, 4895 or 4064 and a 147-168 grain bullet. It doesn't take much to cycle the weapon either so you can develop a pretty soft-shooting load.
Never had a slam fire. I always check to make sure that the primers are below the case head (as in not sticking out) and I use CCI reg primers.
edit: any powder from IMR 3031 to Varget can potentially work but I stick with AA2520 which is like 4895.
