I bought an aac qd flashider for my m1a today and low and behold, the damn thing blows gas in my eyes just as I had anticipated it might do, I know there are a few of you guys here that have suppressed these, so what is the trick to taming the gasses down and keeping the gas from blowing back into your eyes and face, any input is appreciated thanks, Joe

Re: m1a suppressor blowback

I don't claim to know shit about M14s. I was told by someone that a can and full power loads can hurt the system. Any truth to this? Can you bend or mess up the op-rod or whatever it's called slamming the system to hard?

..

There is already a great deal of excellent reading on this very topic within this very same forum.

Tin to cover??

Scope to cover??

STOP - There is nothing appropriate about the excessive gas pressures within an M1a when it is suppressed improperly. I have written on this before, so I'll give you a quick summary. There is work to be done on the spindle or within the can's design itself. Work should be done to get the gas pressures back down to where they belong. Down side risk, dpendant on can and resulting back pressure? So much gas on the bore that one can blow their extractor. Right off the gun. This is why some suppressor makers make specific cans for that platform and will only supply the can with the tuned spindle. There is only two (2) companies that does this Smith and AWC. The later tunes the spindle, how the first does it is unknown to me.

Mini14? Go here and start tuning it DOWN...

Go here...bottom of the page, adjustable gas port...

Re: m1a suppressor blowback

I have a LRB Scout. I don't think I'll be throwing a can on it soon. I might get a test one and beat the shit out of it. I'll find out what changes.
Thanks RT51. Need more hours in the day for projects like this

Re: m1a suppressor blowback

Blow back with a suppressed M14 is normal.

Deflect the gas & debris with a breech shield or quality scope mount and rock on.

I use the Smith Enterprise M14-DC suppressor.

Re: m1a suppressor blowback

I talked to John at smith enterprises yesterday, he told me that blowback was normal and that even with there can it was an issue. I assumed that if a rifle didn't eject that it was because the suppressor caused high pressures and the ejector wouldn't perform right, but he says that's not the case, he says it lowers the pressure and that there gas plug actually has a bigger port to make the action function. Smith also suggested the breech cover, I can tell you that when we installed my can my rifle went from ejecting the spent cases 90 degrees to the right, to ejecting them 20 degrees forward, and I know that the timing and position of the spent cases is directly related to how fast your action is operating, but im not sure of the specs as to where they land with a slow bolt as compared to where they will land with a bolt that is running too fast

The higher the bolt speed the farther forward the brass will eject. Try an adjustable gas plug or just turn the spindle to "off" and use it as a bolt action.

We are all agreeing, regardless of what can you use, get the gas system properly tuned. As stated, it can go from not cycling (low pressure cans) to damage (high pressure cans). Its simple, with this system it needs to be tuned, period.
