M1A to 1000 yds?

Re: M1A to 1000 yds?

When we shot M14's in NRA HP growing up we could only use irons. The NM iron sight had enough adjustment but I doubt I could see the target like I used to

The Smith Enterprises base is a solid unit.

Re: M1A to 1000 yds?

I've shot 1000 with the SADLAK mount and the 10X40 Super Sniper the rig had plenty of elevation. As above Ive shot 1000 at Camp Perry with open sights plenty of elevation on the standard military iron sights.

Use your head. Understand first, a scope on an M14 is a distraction to good shooting, unless you're conscious of the manner it will deceive you into believing you know where the barrel is pointed when the only thing you know for sure is the target/reticle relationship.

Consider shooting your M1a with irons and sling. You'll discover what's really important to good shooting at LR, the least of which is magnification. And, thereafter, knowing what's really important, you'll be able to get results with a scope slightly better than may be possible with irons, on most targets which can be identified from their surroundings with the naked eye.

BTW, whether you'll need a convergent base is mostly about whether your scope, without a convergent base, can be adjusted for a bullet path which will intersect line of sight at 1000 yards. Shooting a 175 grain GMM loading or something like M118 SB, LR, or NM, you'll need a bullet path about 40 to 42 inches above point of aim at 100 yards for a good hit at 1000 yards.

Also, I think you're a neat guy, I admire anyone who chooses an M14 for LR, it's difficult with any sight.

Re: M1A to 1000 yds?

I was using an LRB M25 receiver with 18.5" barrel, USO 1.8-10x37, and 175 gr FGMM at 1000 yards over the summer. 48 MOA was getting them there.

Like Sterling said, LR is difficult with the M14 with any sight, but I don't shoot it because of its level of difficulty, it's just a damn fun rifle to shoot.

Re: M1A to 1000 yds?

Highpower Rule #1 on shooting gas guns at 1000 yards:
Don't shoot a gas gun at 1000 yards.

That said, for fun, I often shoot my iron-sighted LRB M14SA at and a little beyond 1100 yards at NRA Whittington. Not in matches, but at Steel. It'll get there supersonic, even with 150's and it's fun to connect which I can do most the time but it's really beyond the rifle's effective range. Being at 7K above sea level helps keep me supersonic at 1100.

I consider my LRB a 700 yard gun shooting prone with a Turner sling, Krieger barrel, and Iron sights on a 20" target. Beyond 700, it's mostly just for fun. And if the wind gets squirrelly, it gets interesting at 700. Course I'm an amatuer wind shooter...probably always will be.

The Nightforce 5.5-22X50/56 NXS has 100 MOA of elevation adjustment. That should get you to 1000 yards.
