Use your head. Understand first, a scope on an M14 is a distraction to good shooting, unless you're conscious of the manner it will deceive you into believing you know where the barrel is pointed when the only thing you know for sure is the target/reticle relationship.
Consider shooting your M1a with irons and sling. You'll discover what's really important to good shooting at LR, the least of which is magnification. And, thereafter, knowing what's really important, you'll be able to get results with a scope slightly better than may be possible with irons, on most targets which can be identified from their surroundings with the naked eye.
BTW, whether you'll need a convergent base is mostly about whether your scope, without a convergent base, can be adjusted for a bullet path which will intersect line of sight at 1000 yards. Shooting a 175 grain GMM loading or something like M118 SB, LR, or NM, you'll need a bullet path about 40 to 42 inches above point of aim at 100 yards for a good hit at 1000 yards.
Also, I think you're a neat guy, I admire anyone who chooses an M14 for LR, it's difficult with any sight.
