M1A

I was wondering if anyone can give a recommendation on optics for the M1A standard and socom 16. I'm more interested in outfitting the standard with an optic then I am with the 16 but I would appreciate any and all suggestions/recommendations.

Don't scope it unless you change the stock. It won't shoot any better, you'll be less frustrated and will have not spent a few hundred bucks to learn this.

I went with a 2x7 scout scope, burris IIRC, with a ballistic plex reticle on a socom I had, it worked pretty good .

I put a 3x12 horus vision on my loaded model and it works pretty good for what I want it for. I did that because I didn't want to be twisting knobs in the heat of things ( not that I have been in the heat of things, but...) There is definately better glass than the horus vision, but I didn't want to spend a ton of money for glass on a rifle that doesn't shoot as good as my bolt guns.

Not a slam on M1A's, as I love mine, but they are what they are.

Michael and H2O Man have good advise. Mine is the loaded that has all the rails and crap on it. I'm not real wild about a scope mount for the reciever (not that some of them might not be good) but I would definately go with the sage or something with rails.

If I had it to do all over again I would just shoot the irons. In fact I'm kind of pondering selling the scope & Vltor rail upper and lower at some point.

I did this work myself:

- shortened the LOP (stock chop)
- grip texture
- pic rail @ 6 o'clock for attachment of VFG
- female QD sling attachments
- rattle can paintjob

This gives me options without adding too much weight. If you're somewhat handy you should be able to handle it.

I'm kicking around the idea of a side business...

Nice scout stinkyDrunk, have you considered the M8 hand guard from UltiMAK?
It will put the T-1 low enough to allow co witness of the iron sights.

I have a Gen3 scope mount on my Standard M1A. Its nice because I can use my irons but I will most likely swap it out for a Sadlak mount. On my wife's Loaded M1A I went with the ARMS 18 scope mount. This is a very low mount and unless you use see through rings you will not be able to use irons. Another down side is I have to crank her rear iron all the way down so that it doesn't hit the scope.
Either option will result in the need to get a cheek pad of some kind. Ask yourself if you want irons or not. One thing to consider is that if you do want to use irons, how hard is it to go from glass to irons. Cheek pack can be removed easily, a Sage's cheek rest can be lowered.
The M1A is a bad setup for use of glass and iron in conjunction. Its pretty much one or the other.

Thanks, that Ultimak mount completely replaces the handguard right? I'm trying to be a stingy on the weight and that mount looks kinda heavy. Do you know the weight?

A kydex holster maker buddy fabbed up a cheekpiece for me, so I can get a better weld with the T1 or with a Leupy scout scope that came with the rifle. Haven't got it installed yet.

This (AA9126) is the exact rifle I started with. It was gently used and included a Leupy scout scope.

Yes, it does completely replace the handguard and scout mount.
The UltiMAK adds just a few ounces to what your current set up weighs.

I have a standard M1A,.. It's one of the newer ones that comes with a od green stock. I use the arms#18 mount and Bushnell elite 3200 mil-dot.

I get pretty decent groups with the 168gr. TAP FPD ammo.

I also changed the FH for a nat. match one, as well as upgraded to a Saldak TiN coated NM piston. My trigger pack came from the factory set to 4.5lbs,. But it still drives me batty with the way it feels,.. Pretty sure I'll have a max-pack sooner or later.

Biggest thing is ammo selection and your skill,.... M1A's will shoot pretty decent most of the time.

I have a post somewhere over on the fireing line forum that goes into detail about that whole day.

The only issue I have with my Ultimak is that it heats up something fierce after rapid fire. I was intially going to set it up with an Aimpoint, but I am leary with the heat dissipation. The Ultimak is a very nice set up, it is very light weight and sturdy.
