Hi guys, I'm going to be coming into some money soon and i wanted to splurge on a good rifle before i spend the rest on school loans. I've been considering getting one from GAP but I also kind of wanted to build it myself too.

This is a list of parts for an A3 that i took from the sniper central forum. (thank you 7mmRM) and i wanted you guys' opinion on it.

Specifically I'm curious if anyone can see any obvious differences between this list and A5 components.

Re: M40 A5 Build

good luck mate! that sounds like an awesome project... keep us posted

this should have all the specs you need anyway?
http://www.gaprecision.net/mil-spec-rifles/m40a5.html

i respect your desire to do it alone, that will make it all the more special once it's done.

whatever you do, try and keep this rifle forever.

Re: M40 A5 Build

Thanks for the info, and the encouragement. And i do intend to keep this rifle till the day i die:D

Re: M40 A5 Build

I am also on that journey of the m40A5 build.
So with the new contract, will the M40A5 be sporting Premiers? I am to the glass buying stage and not sure if I should keep saving and get the SB or pull the trigger now on a Heritage?

Re: M40 A5 Build

The Ross 30MOA Picatinny rail is not really "clip" slotted. There is a slot for the rail, but it's not used for bullet "clips" like the M40A1, which is clip slotted. I have an M40A5 on order with GAP (1-2 more months to go), but it's gonna be chambered for 260Rem instead of 308Win.

Good luck, I wish I had the equipment to roll my own. Your rifle will be very special when it's done and you find it's a laser!

Re: M40 A5 Build

I saved and bought jerseymike's. The glass is incredible.
On another A5 note, is the spec for the bolt knob just the stock one? or has it changed?
Cheers,
CC

Re: M40 A5 Build

As far as slings, I never saw one without the Leather sling. Everyone that was issued had a turner sling on it. If it had something else it was bought by the Marines personally.

Also, I am no longer in the Marines, but my unit STILL has DD Ross floorplates and about half and half on the scopes. Some don't have that forward rail either.... The Marine Corps replaces stuff SLOWLY. So just because it says the Marines are using XXXX doesn't mean they are...

I'm sure some other Marines and say the same.

Re: M40 A5 Build

Northland, Brother, its fact the M40A3s have the TIS Slings Issued on them. Been that way since 2005. They have purchased them from me many times including many this last week. The USMC purchased for M40A3s and MK11's. The M40A1 had leather on it and the first M40A3s did, so that probably adds to the confusion. Current sling is TIS Quick Cuff.

On the Floormetal what they have been doing is changing to the Badger as the weapons come in for repair, they also change the sling then if need be.

Re: M40 A5 Build

Well everything is different from unit to unit, I've also been out for awhile too so most of my info is fuzzy haha. Thats just how my unit had them set up. 10x, no forward rail, and DD Ross bottom metal.

Re: M40 A5 Build

im having an m40a3 built by my cousin which is a 2112 at qauntico and they suggested i use all badger metal even with the bottom metal and im not building mine with a detachable mag

So, let me get this straight...coming into some money, and have a choice of blowing it on a rifle, OR keeping yourself in debt and NOT paying off school loans?

Hahahahaha..that is what is wrong with kids these days.

HOPEFULLY, since you made this post 9+ months ago, and you have not updated it (you only have 2 posts, so have to assume so), that you got smart, or were only dreaming to begin with, and paid off the loans.

Re: M40 A5 Build

Resurrecting an old thread to save space.

I heard that the M40A5 doesn't come with SIMRAD cap anymore. When did this change occur and is it because the A5 was upgraded to have a PGW PVS-22 mounted up front?

The M40a3 did have the PGW mount on it too. Most units dont have the SIMRAD cap anymore but I do think that the school guns still do have the SIMRAD cap on them. I think that the change came when they started using the PGW mount. But like I said I think that the school guns and some unit guns still have them on there.

Talked with some buddies from the old unit. They have PH's on their MK11's now. Some put them on the 40's too.
