M40 Stock Questions (searched high & low)

I have come to realize that getting my hands (and caliper/tape measure)on an original wood M40 stock is going to be tough. I am going to build my own. I have started on the build method discussed in smallarmsreview.com article, using a modified ADL stock. I'd like to know the actual forend width at three discrete places from front action screw to forend tip. I may have duplicating capabilities within reach. If I could get one spec stock made (or 1 I could copy), i'd start sleeping again. I have an early 6-digit ADL short action/stock. This killin' me.

thanks

Re: M40 Stock Questions (searched high & low)

Ive read a few post form guys that got pretty correct stocks off of numirch gun parts. Some were already pretty close, a few meeded modification - refinishing, checkering removal etc....

and i think a couple folks made new similar stocks, i'll pass it along if i can find them

If I can make 1 that is spot-on, I mean to a "T", I maybe in a position to aid in providing more for others who are interested in the early M40's. I'd feel better having some measurements off of an "original". I'll try to post some pics showing my area of concern.

If you have access to a late 60's to early 70's Remington Varmint Special stock(what Remington's heavy barrel was called) then you copy that. They are the same stock less checkering, tenite tip and grip and the gloss finish. The first 700P made in the mid to late 80's was the same except for forend top was flat and slanted back and not rounded off.

Several guys have steamed the pressed checkering mostly out of an early ADL and used that. However I have layed a Remington Varmint barrel on top of one and don't see how in the hell it would work descent. The mid to late 80's ADL stocks with the cut checkering have a bit wider forend and will take a Varmint weight barrel but the cut checkering poses a problem.

Where are you located. I have numerous stocks from the 700P's and about 3 have had the BC opened up way to much for some reason. Might sell you one you could use for a pattern or rebed the barrel channel and make it work for you. Would be noticeable but if dyed brown could be made to look half assed descent. Let me know.

cwood3,
I used a 60s area pressed checkering ADL stock for my build and it came out wonderful. The cut checkering requires to much sanding in my opinion.

Its a lot of work and takes time. You can't rush it just steam and lightly sand the checkering until its gone then stain it and oil it.

You need to be very careful cutting out the barrel channel and bottom area for the floor plate. A slip or mistake here can ruin the stock for you. Good luck on your project!!

Lay a damp cloth such as an old wash cloth over the pressed in checkering or a dent and put a steam iron on top for a bit. Heat forces moisture into the wood and raised the dents, impressions etc.
