So I've been saving every image I can find concerning the M40A1 in use. Figure I'd share them hear. Maybe other's will post some that I may not have (or larger versions if you have one I posted).

Pretty sure this picture....

1565694933081.png

relates to the Sniper Team that was ambushed and KIA in Iraq with their weapons being captured.

That rifle was recovered from a inside MV surrounded by dead bad guys.

Same rifle.....

Note the scope. The turds either broke or couldnt figure out the Unertl.

I think I remember reading that story somewhere.

Thanks for all those pics, there are several that I'd have not seen before. I'll add a couple more I saved.

This one shows the odd-ball Redfield 3-9X 'Widefield' scopes that the USMC evaluated in the
very late 1970s on the early M40A1s, before they selected the Unertl 10X scopes around 1980.
My best guess this picture is probably from the 1978-1979 era.

(This is circa 1991, Desert Storm era, on a Navy ship. So not exactly in use, but in the wild and around the area of operations)
M40A1_Smear_circa_1991_crp.jpg

I'd guess this one is early 2000s.

M40A1 on left and mystery rifle on right. (I think this was from the mid-to-late-1990s, but not sure at this point)

I may have a few more on my hard drive, but that's my contribution re M40A1s in use.

The story I read (maybe just one) was the guy and his spotter were driving around in his car hitting Army patrols. Someone saw it and popped the sniper....who happened to be holding a captured Marine sniper weapon. Due to the damage this sniper did to the Army and the Marine who gave his life for it, they were quite happy to bring it back to the Marines.

Im suprised im seeing so many A1s without the tombstone safety. Up until now I didnt realize a standard round one was correct also.

What's the story with the windage knob? That should have cost a TON of flutter kicks.

First version Unertl had what was referred to as "The football" windage knobs.

Probably overthought as a tactile feel needed because the Marines, in the dark, would not be able to tell if the rifle was oriented properly.

Someone thankfully said "Marines are not that stupid" and saved the money by standardizing the turret construction.

That genius than went and ate some crayons.

Looks like it also saved the slim profile of the rifle.

I like how "the football" tucks in nicely to the side of the scope.

USO aught to make up a bunch of those and let owners retrofit their scopes with the old school windage knobs.

Never knew that about the uso. I wish more companies made very low profile windage knobs like that. The vast majority hold for wind instead of dialing now...needless bulk.

Wasnt USO.

Unertl's first scopes had that windage knob.

So then where did the Weaver T-10 scopes fit in? Or was that a sort of trial basis?

That was a trial basis with the widefields as well, there’s even some luepold A1 trial scopes that were tested, but little to nothing is known about them and there’s no info online about them. I have heard of somebody who has USMC leupold prototype scope I have been meaning to send them a message and ask for some details.

Some more in the wild pics

The bottom one in this lineup always make me wonder why I still have this spare kidney and testicle ?...hell the appendix and tonsils can go too as a package deal.

You are holding out hope on meeting the gun bearer in the top photo and are not totally sold on giving up the testicle.............

She and a coworker used to be all over SH doing rifle pics Pre Scout. The rumor was that some creep crossed the line and all the pics dissapeared.
