I am getting an AX308MC and will get a .260 barrel to shoot both for general target shooting and completion use. I plan on shooting 1000 yards and possibly further if I can find an area with the range. At Colorado altitude, 1500 yards with the .260 is not out of the question. On the low end I am thinking the 3-5x range and 18-25x on the high end. H-59 is the reticle I want. How useful is the illuminated reticle in practice? If it is too dark to see the target, then why have the reticle bright? Also, for the ranges and uses I will be using it for; what mag range is better? I qualify for the Leupold Fed/Mil discount so the Mark 6 3-18x44 is at the top of the list. I am also considering the Nightforce BEAST and the S/B 3-20x50 PM2 3-20x50. Any input is appreciated, thank you in advance.

There are plenty of scopes that will do what you need, just depends on your budget. I suggest taking a drive over to Longmont / Erie and stopping by TriggerTime gun club and you can take a look through some high quality glass (S&B, IOR, Steiner, etc). The guys at TriggerTime have top notch customer service. They offer ELR precision rifle courses as well Precision Rifle Course

Mile High shooting accessories is a short distance from there as well and has a shop. Welcome to Mile High Shooting Accessories

I noticed the illumination is useless for me during the day. At full brightness in green or red, I cant tell its illuminating at all (nor do I need it to). During a night shoot, i use the green only at lowest setting. Anything else would be too bright and "blind" my sight picture. Fyi, this is on my weaver 3-15x50 EMDR ffp.
