Law Enforcement Sniper Surgical Shooting Course

Date: April 9-11, 2013

Location: North County Shooting Association, Pala, California

Course Description:
The Law Enforcement Sniper Surgical Shooting Course is a curriculum focused on the precision marksmanship and surgical shooting skills required by the law enforcement sniper. This is an abbreviated Law Enforcement Basic Sniper Course, which is normally 5-6 days in duration.

The Surgical Shooting Course is designed to focus solely on precision marksmanship. Topics to be discussed are:

Fundamentals of Marksmanship
Rifle Set-Up and Zero
Basic Internal, External, and Terminal Ballistics
Collection and recording of shot data
Range estimation
Trajectory validation
Scope turret manipulation
Rapid threat acquisition and multiple target engagement
Unconventional shooting positions
Tripod supported shooting positions
Obstacle/Barrier Clearance techniques
Intermediate Barrier penetration and practical application
Stress inoculation shooting
Known and unknown distance target engagement from 70 to 500 yards

The student can expect a fast-paced, information intensive training environment focused on the combative and problem solving mindset required of the law enforcement sniper. The student should expect to engage targets from a distance of 70 yards to 500 yards from various unconventional shooting positions while under physical and mental stress in closely simulated operational conditions.

Also included will be an introduction to night operations. Sponsored by Knights Armament Company and BE Meyers, this inclusion is meant to familiarize the student with current night vision technology and associated support equipment such as IR designation and illumination as well as white light contingencies.

Ammunition Requirement: 400 rounds match ammunition

Cost: $700 per student

BASIC SNIPER AND FIELD SKILLS: • Mission and Purpose of the Law Enforcement Sniper • Legal Aspects of Law Enforcement Sniping • Observation and Target Detection • Actions on the Objective/Crisis Site • Collecting and Reporting of Information • Selection, Occupation and Construction of Rural, Urban and Vehicle Positions •Camouflage, Individual Movement and Stalking Skills

HARDWARE/KIT: **All students will be expected to train using appropriate call-out gear such as helmets, body armor and any other load bearing equipment that is standard to the students' unit SOP.**

• Front and Rear Rifle supports. (Bipods and a bean-bag) • Rifle Cheek Piece (If the weapon's stock is not adjustable) • Rifle Cleaning Equipment • Rifle Sling • Weapon Data Book (Provided) • Pen/Pencil and a Notebook • Eye and Ear Protection • Sturdy footwear • Clothing appropriate for the weather conditions. (We will shoot rain, shine, sleet or snow. Please be prepared and check the weather.) • Baseball or Boonie Style Hat • Water Hydrating Device • A pack that is suitable for carrying all of your range gear. • Range Chair (All classroom instruction will be under field conditions.) • Ghillie Suit (Or other appropriate rural camouflage system.) • Camouflage face paint • Garden Shears • Tripod to utilize as a shooting support • Urban Hide Kit

(Not necessary to attend, but if your department possesses one please bring to the course)

• Shooting Mat (Recommended but not required for attendance) • Personal Ballistic Computer/PDA or your weapon/ammo ballistic data (Recommended but not required for attendance) • Personal Weather Station (Kestrel) (Recommended but not required for attendance) • Spotting Scope and Tripod (REQUIRED) • Binoculars (REQUIRED) • Laser Range finder (REQUIRED)

We'll have a 5 day LE Basic Sniper for sure and perhaps a 5 day Advanced as well. CJTC finally decided to run both this year, next month actually at YTC. I'm sure there'll be plenty of interest even after that course is ran to fill up ours.
