Hey all, just finished the Magpul PR2 course last weekend. I had taken PR1 with Caylen earlier this year and came away with what I felt was a nice bit of tools for the tool box, I showed up at this course expecting the same. I was in for a surprise, I was completely blown away by this course. Say goodbye to your comfort zone and don't anticipate spending much time shooting prone supported. The final day "the Gauntlet" as it has been named is an entire day of shooting in what I can only describe as a Field Competition environment moving around the entire range 360 degrees. Lots of different positions and targets from 300yds to 1100+. Oh and the wind at this location is not an easy read. I don't care who you are you will be challenged. This course is tailor made for those shooters wanting to shoot tactical competitions in real environments. I had a blast and shot with some amazing shooters. Mike C and Tim I want a rematch!! Pics to follow.

Re: Magpul Precision Rifle 2

Yep, great class. My comfort zone is the confidence I have in my ability to consistently execute the fundamentals Caylen introduced in PR 1 in no-stress prone supported shooting. He made it clear from the outset that we'd be putting that in the rear-view mirror, and quickly at that. All of our drills were shot for score, and the cream definitely rose to the top as Mike and Tim walked away with the top placings when all was said and done.

The theme of the class was learning to use the rifle as a tool to solve real-world marksmanship problems, with a strong emphasis on unconventional supported shooting positions. Applying the fundamentals to these new shooting positions was challenging, to say the least. When I was able to find NPA the steel rang at distances that I would have otherwise believed were unreachable from anything but the prone.

The final day tied all of the previously covered material together with a challenging field exercise shot over varied terrain in a gusty frontal wind that was literally blowing from all points of the compass relative to our shooting positions as the day progressed.

I came away from the course with a new appreciation for what's possible with a rifle. A week ago I thought that shooting off a tripod or sticks could offer incremental improvements at best over unsupported shooting. As I write this I realize that with practice I can build remarkably stable shooting positions with my rifle, my body, and simple, easily portable props.

For me, PR 1 was about fundamentals and putting a few new tricks in the bag. The fundamentals were absolutely necessary for this class, but it was very much about the tricks. I can't honestly say that they're in the bag quite yet, but Caylen does a remarkable job of giving his students the tools that they need to raise the level of their game. I walked away with an awareness of new skills, a clear understanding of how to refine them, and the desire to do so. I'm not sure how much more could be asked from a weekend of instruction. Highly recommended.

Re: Magpul Precision Rifle 2

I just took the class with Magpul as well and I can honestly say this is the best long range class I have ever attended. Every shooter was pushed out of their comfort zones, not only with different positional shooting but by being put under time pressures and physical/mental stress in order to produce a more realistic shooting environment.

Caylen is more then willing to answer any question you might have related to shooting. Even lunches were spent talking about reloading, equipment, and real life situations where the skills we were learning were put to use.

The environment that you will shoot in is unlike any other I've seen. It can't be described as a range as much as a shooters paradise! It consists of a huge bowl over 1000 yards across surrounded by 360 degrees of different shooting positions. On the 3rd day we were told to pack everything we needed to shoot for 8 hours. We then started hiking and shot a total of 8 different stages shooting uphill, downhill, multiple crosswinds, (including a vary bizzare vertical wind from shooting down a hill with a headwind), and varying positional stages that put into practice what we had learned in the previous 2 days.

The big take away from this class for me is there is a lot more to shooting then getting down in a perfect world prone position that most of us are already very comfortable with. This class emphasizes realistic practical long range shooting to make you a better more rounded shooter. Well done Caylen for putting together a grade A class.

You are all big jerks

I am completely jealous. Just happened to see Caylen today, sounds like your class was top shelf instruction with a good group of shooters. Next time...
