For under $300 for a used makarov. What are your thoughts for a conceal carry gun. Any first hand knowledge on reliability, ease of use and close quarter accuracy would be great

I took it to the range immediately after the "BANG" and decocked it several more times to make sure it wasn't me, and it would fire about 40% of the time just being decocked.

Needless to say, I am not a fan of these guns.

Re: makarov, thoughts?

Well I can certainly imagine why your not a fan, any reason to believe it is a design flaw as apposed to an issue with that specific gun. Can't imaginesuch a widely adopted fire arm having such a consistant and potentially fatal flaw.

Re: makarov, thoughts?

Good question, I wish I knew enough about the internals to really diagnose what the problem was.

Honestly though, at $300.00 I would avoid if for no other reason, than you can buy a brand new Glock 19 for about $375.00 with a mil/leo discount if you find a dealer that honers this offer...they are out there.

Re: makarov, thoughts?

My mistake, typimg on this new phone. The makarov im looking at is sub $200. The guy is asking $200 with 3 mags holster and 50 rounds of ammo

Re: makarov, thoughts?

Carried one for years, put over 5K rds of Wolf threw it w/o cleaning, still goes bang every time. Never trust a decocker on any weapon, thumb the hammer down if needed.
Real Maks are one of the most dependable side arms made, if it was made by the same folks that brought you the AK47.

Shot mine to 100yds all the time, minute of 1 gallon paint bucket was never an issue. Mag change sucks, but if you have to change mags in a ccw gun fight you might want to rethink many thing's.

Maybe it has a HK barrel from a P7 hahaha

I only fired Makarovs on the range. In my opinion they are not bad, but as Doorkicker said I wouldn't give it too much tought and get a new G19 for the same money.

Re: makarov, thoughts?

They're decent pistols when compared up to the other offerings under $400. The CZ82 is another nice little pistol that I have several copies of.

The decocker issue mentioned is wear issue, not necessarily a design issue in the few that I've had.

They are pretty accurate considering what they are, again like above, paint cans at 100yd were not usually a problem with me.

The smoothbore problem can get your ass in a crack though, there's a large number that made it into the country without a good check done on them and they are either shot out or were never rifled. Most have polygonal rifling in them and it makes a rifled vs. unrifled barrel difficult to spot. If you're caught with an unrifled version it's considered a smoothbore pistol which is an NFA controlled item.

For under $200 it makes a dandy little piece for plinking and CCW. My mom keeps one with her for that reason. IIRC the going rate for a real Mak is somewhere around $250 dealer price right now.
