Has anyone used a Manson truing system on a 700 and then indicated the action in a lathe afterward to see how the Manson system did? If so, what were the results? Does the Manson system work as well as a lathe?

Thanks,

John

The Manson system doesn't align the thread tennon with the actions raceway like properly dialing in and single point recurring the threads on a lathe.

Is the Manson better than nothing? Maybe, I don't know?

I'd say it's best to do it right the first time around, though I have not indicated a receiver that has been "trued" using the Manson system.

I have two Manson systems (regular and .010" oversized) (and I have single pointed some actions to true them). I never indicated an action after. I worked on some pretty crudely machined 700s that looked way better afterwards.

I like the Manson system, but understand its limitations.

Take a look at the M40A3 build thread, the USMC uses it on their rifles.

I use it. No issues. I have taken untouched actions screwed them on a freshly cut accurate tenon and checked the runout on the rear of the action, then trued the action and checked again. The one I remember, a long action, untouched was .012" on the bore. Trued that same action and it came down to .003". I've checked a lot of custom actions and they aren't perfect either. Most are around that .003" range. If you understand the relationship of the interface between a threaded tenon and a perpendicular shoulder you won't any problems.
