Maple Syrup.

Re: Maple Syrup.

Yeah, 40 ta one.

Long story short.
Thought I was gonna get a couple trees for a few days...
That was about three weeks ago.

Best Spile is an air fitting and line.

Our weather sucks, so looks like my next couple weeks are planned.

Buds aren't even swelling

Re: Maple Syrup.

The first time I ever made maple syrup, we collected the sap in 10 gallon milk cans until we had more than enough to justify the boil. However, while it sat around those few days it turned sour for some reason. It should be boiled in small batches not long after you collect it.

Re: Maple Syrup.

I read it is like milk. (spoiling)
Just thought it would be fun to do.
Wasn't getting much from the first four trees.
Tapped four more, and was getting 8-12 gallons of sap a day.
Today I got 19 and probably spilled a couple more!
Doing in stages works good.
Filter between each.
Back to my nightmare.

Re: Maple Syrup.

I know I'm preaching to the choir but man REAL maple syrup is so much better than that store bought crap. Where I am, we'll have maple festivals starting (if it ever stops snowing and things warm up a bit) shortly.

Re: Maple Syrup.

Log Cabin it ain't.
I could drive to the store for less money and time.
Probably chaper than homemade deer jerky, once you figure in the truck and gun!

Already planning for next year.
Owner expects to see lines ran.
Better process.

Have 10 gallons of fresh sap to deal with right now.
Plus what I cooked down last night.

Drink in order.
Tumbler of crushed ice.
Shot of maple.
Top with corn or bourbon.
I'll see if it works.

Re: Maple Syrup.

Thank's Switch.
Always enjoy seeing your feeds.
Here's the basics for my apple pie.
(leaving sugar out till I figure the maple in.)

One gallon of apple juice. (heat till warm)
Add Spices like making apple pie.
Spices should be whole and held like making pickle brine.
Simmer about 20-30 min low.
Add gallon of cold cider to cool.
Add a fith of 151 Bacardi and 151 vodka.
Jug it up with a couple cinnomon sticks, whole alspice, and cloves.

Keep cool and test daily.
Pull spices when you think it tastes right.
Vodka taste will mellow after that.

Best served freezer cold.
Taste changes as it warms up while sipping.

Re: Maple Syrup.

At deer camp in the U.P. the traditional after dinner/before titty bar drink is the Old Fashioned. We substitute a muddled sugar cube with maple syrup and call it a Yooper.

Bourbon
Ice
Teaspoon or so of maple syrup
2 dashes bitters
Two maraschino cherries
Orange slice

Re: Maple Syrup.

Now that sounds good .50cal. 4oz Bourbon to the 1oz of the rest of it?

Re: Maple Syrup.

Hey it's your story you're sticking with.
I can think of a drink after the titty bar with two slices and one cherry!
Little syrup and bourbon on the side.

If the weatherman is right, I should be done.
Should be done in a couple days.

Bohem, let me know when you and don't call me are planning on a weekend at the range this summer.

Re: Maple Syrup.

The funny thing is my uncles deer camp is 45 min from the nearest anything but exactly 1.23 miles from the seasonal titty bar. Lots of good times up there.

Maple syrup and Bourbon, all the body ever needs!
"Maple syrup: It's sweet, it's calorific, and -- this just in -- it contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatories and stuff. Which must mean -- reasoning leap alert! -- that it is a superfood that can help ward off myriad health problems, like cancer and diabetes."

Re: Maple Syrup.

50calcruiser: A Yooper to me consists of looking in the mirror. Usually it's a fifth of VO before dinner and don't even think about the titty bar because the only one in the area last I heard (BIG BONS) featured a Grandmother+Mother+Daughter act.

Like John said, you are one brave SOB
