Range Report Marine Corps Using New SOST Rounds

I thought this was a pretty interesting article, talking about taking away the conventional M855, and replacing it with what is formally known as MK318 MOD 0 enhanced 5.56mm ammunition.
Any range reports and/or exterior ballistics on this round?

Probably not. This bullet is designed for barrier penetration. The BC is pretty much irrelevant, as it isn't designed for long-distance shooting, and is designed to be shot out of short-barrel carbines. See:

These must be what I was thinking of as the 62 grainers, used by other special forces and in other branches? So I suppose they have been used for quite a while now. That's a very handy-dandy PPT presentation there Lindy, thanks for the extra info.

Maybe not. The standard SS109 bullet, AKA M855, is also 62 grains.

Ah, *new 62 grainers. Which they're not, just being used by other forces, I believe they talked about making the switch last year if I remember correctly. But I suppose it's just now coming into effect, or maybe there were debates I had no idea were going on (like most of them). But the BC's are similar?

IMI does. IIRC, Hornady may have private-labled them and distributed them Stateside. Tried a box years ago--they have the same more slender ogive as M855, but no steel penetrator tip and presumably slightly more accuracy potential.

Can't comment on accuracy, but they *are* open-base FMJBTs. The rifle I tested them in never really shot that great with anything.

I used them in Ramadi 3+ years ago so I found it amusing when I saw the article in the times couple weeks ago

Yea i think they need to update the weapon systems. With a round in the middle of the 223 and 308. Like the 6.5 grendal or something in the 6mm section. My 243win really drops deer if you shoot them in the right spot.

Sounds like the 5.45x39 in the AK74; their bullets are hollowed on the inside of the tip.

Although I didn't know the .308 MatchKing used by snipers was like that...
