Marine Sniper Rifle Question??

I just finished reading a book titled "Down South - One Tour in Vietnam" by William H. Hardwick and towards the end the author(he's a Marine officer) tells about a Marine Sniper shooting a couple of NVA at a thousand meters with a .270-caliber scoped target rifle. I just thought all the services used .30-caliber rifles, so I wondering about this.
