I did a trigger job on my buddies 17HMR last nite on a heavy barrelled 917 and though the trigger came out nice, i can't say I've ever had a loose barrel lug before. the lug is very loose in the dovetail, and i just know that mine is not like that at all. My 882SSV seems to have had to press the barrel lug in place. matter of fact, the only time i ever had mine out, I had to freeze the plug and heat the barrel to get it to slide into place.

His will just fall out. I don't think it will affect anything once the barrel screw is snugged up, b/c the barrel is free float up to this point and the wood is very tight fit (checked with modelling clay) at the point the stud fits into the stock.

I was toying with the notion of putting a dab of JB weld into the dovetail and letting things harden up with the rifle in a vice overnight to make sure the barrel stays straight in the action...or should I leave it alone? The gun shot half inch groups at 50 yards before I did the trigger, and before I started the trigger was 8.5 lbs, now it's just a tad under 4 and very crisp. I took out all the creep by polishing all sear engagement surfaces and lubing things up a little.

Re: Marlin 917V - Loose barrel Lug/stud?

My 917V and 925 both have the loose barrel lugs (they fall out) and they both shoot very well. Instead of JB welding the lug in, I would just bed the whole action and 1" in front on the barrel lug. I did this on the 925 and it is much more consistent with cheaper ammo. Now it will shoot CCI Blazer into groups about the same size as federal 711B.

I have not bedded the 917V yet because it is very precise and accurate so I don't see the need at this point.

Just don't tighten the reciever screw too tight when putting it back together or it will wear on the bolt or even stop it from being able to be removed.

Re: Marlin 917V - Loose barrel Lug/stud?

actually, both bolts on the Marlin should just be "snug" but not TIGHT. if you overtighten the barrel lug screw, accuracy will suffer, and if you over tighten the action screw, it will impede the bolt.

Overall my buddy is very happy with the trigger job I did. when he dropped the rifle off, i could pick the rifle up by the trigger without it going off. that put the trigger in excess of 8 lbs or so. he swears it was 10. I measured (yeah..yeah, i know... ) with a bathroom scale and the trigger clicked just as I eclipsed 8 lbs. After i got done, i have him down to a very crisp 4lbs. I polished all sear surfaces, lubed things up nice, took the factory trigger spring and removed 2 coils, then buddied that up with the stock sear spring effectively tripling it's force, and opened up the pilot hole in the receiver to the diameter of the trigger spring to give it a good perch. the stock trigger spring was replaced with the usual clicker pen spring, trimmed to the correct length. I also removed just a touch of the sear surface really only taking off a couple thousandths but it made a marked improvement in the absence of creep and the trigger is very crisp now.

he was getting solid 1-1.25" groups with Hornady VMAX ammo, not sure what grain. he's now getting (LOL...get THIS unit of measure) Minute of Dog Food.

he's happy to say the least. This is 5 shots at 100 yards. the target was a thumb tac. you can see the hole from the tack in the paper with 4 bullet holes horizontally strung to the left. had there been no wind, i have no doubt it would have been a single hole. The top right appears to be the fifth bullet, tucked in with shot #1. I told him to stop shooting at a single bull with allshots, but to shoot at individual bulls so we don't have any more stacked shots. Going back out this weekend to test again. Hopefully the wind holds out.

^ I experimented with a clicker pen spring myself. It worked well, but did not seem very safe. I have a Rifle Basix now set at about 16 oz. This is my best 5 round at 100 so far..

Re: Marlin 917V - Loose barrel Lug/stud?

the pen spring trick is fine as long as you test it before going afield. you MUST check the safety. Gun should not discharge due to a hard rap on the floor. no discharge with the safety on at all. my trigger is VERy light, and will not accidental discharge. MIne is SO light in fact that on occasion the sear will not engage properly when closing the bolt. this is very rare, but due to the amount of force my springs are placing on the sear. I can count on one hand the number of times this has happened, and I think i have finally fixed it by placing a slightly stronger spring in the trigger housing too. wish you were close by...you might enjoy the work i've done on it
