I went to the Range this morning and did some 25 & 50 yard preliminary zeroing and ammo testing.

The rifle (as stated in topic) is a 925 bolt action magazine fed Marlin. I installed a cheap 3-9x32 Tasco .22 Scope on it, Rock Mount Bipod, and Allen Sling.

Here are some group results from 25 & 50 yards - off the bench using the bipod only. It was 32 degrees at the Range this morning. No wind to speak of. I believe the results of each group are readable in each target block in the picture below.

Better optics, warmer weather, more familiarization with the 925, and I believe this will be one heck of a rifle. I bought this rifle for 25 & 50 yard shooting. Right now I believe I would give the ammo edge to the Federal 510B (1240 fps)... This could change in warmer weather?

Re: Marlin 925 Range Report

A little warmer temps and more ammo testing and I think you will improve on your groups with the Marlin.

Marlin bolt .22's are suprisingly accurate.

and winchester .22 ammo I've never had any luck with.

where did you get the Allen Sling?

Re: Marlin 925 Range Report

I agree w/ Shiraz, w/ warmer temps & more ammo testing the groups will definitely improve. The Marlin bolts are good shooters. I am trying to work out a trade for a Marlin 981T.

I'll have to get the Product number from work tomorrow. I didn't see the sling I use over on Midway USA that you asked about in another post. I'll post the number and also send you a PM.

Re: Marlin 925 Range Report

I have a marlin 981t and it shoots extremely well. I mounted a 4x30 nikon prostaff on it and it works great for a hunting rifle. The only thing that I do not like about it is you cannot adjust the trigger, or at least I never found a way to, but all in all it performs really well. I dont do much target shooting with it so I couldnt tell you how it groups but it has been known to take out a few tree rats.

Re: Marlin 925 Range Report

I felt the 510 performed the best. The Eley wasn't bad from 25 yards, but for 25 and 50 yard shooting there should not be a need for me to use subsonic ammo unless it's a personal choice in doing so.

I contribute much of my poor flyer shooting to eye fatigue from the scope. At least that's what I'm telling myself now.

On target #5 (low right) - 50 yard target paper - I just fell apart and couldn't put the shots together like I had done with #'s 1, 4, & 6, from 50 yards.

This rifle will get a test in our February SH Short Range Matches here at SH. I'd also like to see what it can do without the scope?

Re: Marlin 925 Range Report

Nice! Have the same rifle. I mounted a Nikko Sterling scope on mine, did a quick 25 yard zero. At 25 yards I was getting a 1/2" to 3/4" group using Winchester and Federal bulk pack ammo. After the initial zero I have not shot it since. Very surprised these rifles can shoot that well.

Re: Marlin 925 Range Report

Inkedshooter, I'm hopeful this weekend will be tolorable (weather-wise) to go shooting. I took my scope and bi-pod off this rifle (left the sling) as to zero it with open sights now, off the sand bags and then shoot some 4 position.

I don't know if others do this, but with the rifles I have that are scoped and still carrying the factory sights I like to get them zeroed as best I can in case my scope would go south on me for some reason or another, I would then at least have the factory sights to fall back on.

Also, I got to thinking about how the Winchester X22LR performed from 50 yards and I think I can tighten that up at 25 yards.

Re: Marlin 925 Range Report

My son has 925c and at 120yds he was hitting a 3 inch steel 9 out of 10 times. Pushed it back to 200yds and was hitting the 4 inch plate 7 out of 10 times. I believe it was Remington bulk ammo, 64 deg with light wind at our back. Fantastic riffle.

As a side note this was his first time shooting at 200yds and I just barely did better with my CZ.

Re: Marlin 925 Range Report

Didn't get to shoot the 925 today, had some other shooting going on. Hopefully tomorrow I can get out with the 925 and punch some holes in paper using the iron sights.

Just setting here looking over the 925, I really like the feel and fit of it.
