So, I picked up a Ruger SP101 for concealed carry and as a back woods kit gun. Problems, it's too shiny, and around here in Amarillo where I now live no one does bead blasting. Is there another way to matte it? I really don't want to send it off as Ialready did an action job myself, and i can't see buying a blast cabinet for a 1 time job.

Re: matting stainless steel

Check around your local hot rodders, and you will find someone that has a blast cabinet that would let you blast it.

Harbor Freight has a spot sandblast gun for real cheap. If you have a compressor--the gun has a bag for the grit. Some 220 grit from a craft supply would give it a dull finish. The gun probably would last enough for one pistol.....probably.

Re: matting stainless steel

You can give it a brushed look with 600 grit sandpaper. You need to keep your brush marks straight which can be a rather difficult and time consuming process. But if you fuck up, you can always get it blasted.

I had a cheapo harbor freight cabinet and small air compressor until I upgraded to the bigger machines. The small harbor freight cabinet with some glass beads would work well if you are only using it once in a while. It might come in handy for other things as well and not a huge investment. I recommend you use it outdoors and wear a dust mask.

You don't necessarily need a blast cabinet unless you are wanting to retain used media.
If you have an air compressor ~ you can get a gravity feed blaster for $20 at Harbor Frieght and a small amount of beads for about $25.
Just blast into a big box or out in the open.
YMMV
