Is it worth the expense to do a mauser build? Will it be as accurate as a 700 build. I have a nice German Mauser action and I cant decide what to do with it.

Re: Mauser 98 build question

you are going to have to get a good trigger. You will be a little limited on scope mount availability. You will be limited to shorter cases than the 8MM like 308 unless you have a 30.06 action. Lock time is slower but this makes no difference in prone slow fire. You should be good to go once you get that stuff worked out.

Re: Mauser 98 build question

I was thinking about a 308. I spoke to a local gunsmith who lives by me who does a lot of mausers. He said he could mount a rail on the reciver, He builds his own triggers for the or I can go aftermarket. But I am going to have 2 grand in it. And cant decide if it is worth it.

Re: Mauser 98 build question

Many an expensive, custom hunting rifle are built on the 'ol Mauser 98 action. I'm getting an action soon myself. I saw today that Krieger offers truing a mauser receiver pretty cheap. Might have to have them true my action and throw on a .338 win mag barrel in #5 or 6 contour. Then throw it in an Accurate Innovations stock.

Re: Mauser 98 build question

Hi if you were building a big game hunting rifle i would say go for it you can have a Mauser 98 build cost ove 4500 US in a big game rifle but if you want an accurate target type rifle i would stick to the rem700 typoe actiosn. the triggers and other accesories are easier to get and are cheeper because of the quantities that are made. As for accuracy it is easier to make a remington shoot than a mauser98. They can be made to shoot well but they have limitations. their is a cock on opening kit you can fit a bolt shroud safty, drop floor plate and so on. but i would not drop that sourt of coin into a mauser 98 unless it was to build a realy nice custom hunting rifle in a bigger calibre like a 416 Ruger it would fit in no problems. As long as it is a large ring mauser.

What do you want this rifle for? do you want detachable mags? the use you will use the rifle for will determine the outcome of the build the answer to the first question is yes you can build an accurate rifle on them but what do you want to use it for and the configeration is more important at this stage of the build.

Re: Mauser 98 build question

Thanks for the advice. This gun would be used for hunting mostly, But would see alot of range time. Yes I want detachable mags. Maybe I Should have another .375 H&H built of this action.
I was thinking of buying one of the Sniper's Hide rifles but I think it will be to heavy.

Re: Mauser 98 build question

My Mauser 98 based rifle shoots pretty well, considering i bought it used with ?????rounds down the barrel.
With my handloads I can hold .75 MOA. And it eats ALL 308 ammo without problems and reliable precision. My 98 does not shoot as good as FMsnipers, but I scored good in all (local) competitions I shot. I even beat some guys with their TRG's, good times.
My only issue is the fixed mag. Therefore I bought a Tikka T3. Now my Mauser is my 100 meter rifle, the Tikka is for 300 m. Or so I told my wife ;-)
